Technically, the game consists of a server and a client side. The server side is a program running in the background that handles all the game logic and simulation. The client side runs in the browser and shows the simulation that lives on the server side. User interaction happens in the browser. Everything the user does in the browser is send back to the server that shows some response (for example the user clicks on a unit and issues a move command; after that the server side start to move the unit). Besides having many disadvantages one pros of this architecture is that the game can be run on-line in massive multi-player mode.
