Post news Report RSS Check out our new video player

We've been working hard on the site as always, read on for the latest changes we've made to the video and image gallery system.

Posted by on

So the video player we were running on the site was about 10 versions old (not years!). This meant it's compatibility with HTML5, mobile etc was a little dubious at the best of times. Our new player is:

  • HTML5 native in modern browsers (should mean much fewer CPU / stability issues that flash causes)
  • Supports related videos (click the button below) which we will use to help everyone promote everyone
  • Switches between SD and HD fluidly
  • Check out the demo video we have grabbed from Switchcars:

We've also updated the image gallery system so that now when you click on the "view HD" link the gallery goes full screen. Browse any image gallery and hit that button to see this feature in action. More to come, hope you enjoy the changes and let us know if you encounter any problems!

Quite possible this is the jw player. We customized the skin a little to add moddb red to it :)

Good. But will be bad if you will force show too long ads, like 30 sec or more. Stick to the youtube's video ads policy, where you can skip an ad after some time if you don't like it or saw it already. And it will be fine.

Agreed, I ended up turning ad block back on because it was driving me nuts.

Yeah, I hate when they force us to watch long ads. The reason I reactivated adblock on Youtube was because there are some times they don't let you skip them (or at least there was, it has been some months since then, I should test it again).

You should only see one ad max If you are logged in. Are a lot of long ads been shown right now?

A little feedback: If you are seeing images in HD and then you go to the videos section, the video will be the correct size, but the area the video is will be stretched.

Just go to an image gallery, put the images on HD and then go to the video gallery and you should see it.

Ahh thanks for the bug report I'll get on it. What do you think of the HD image mode?

Reply Good karma+3 votes

I liked it, it increases the size of the image while still keeping everything on screen. Now, I'll use it to see full images and 'view original' to see the details up close, if the image is even bigger.

And it looks good in the current layout, it doesn't look like it was just patched over it. :)

I don't think the player should be just a black rectangle with nothing in it?

EDIT: Tested various profiles including my own. Nothing but black rectangles. What is it supposed to use? HTML5? That works, I used it myself. Some strange IE only hack?

EDIT EDIT: I checked the page with html debugger. Something is wrong with the scripts. The console gets this error:
NetworkError: 400 Bad Request - Static.moddb.com"

Try doing a ctrl refresh has your browser cached an old version? Is your Adblock or cross domain policy blocking this script from loading?

Adblock is blocking nothing on this news page here. Ghostery is also not tagging anything which is not a known ad-spyware and in particular nothing that should get even remotely close to something playing videos. As mentioned in the error the problem is not running the script it's that the script delivers (maybe OS specific) a wrong URL which really leads to 400. I think a configuration option is wrong somewhere.

Same thing on my end, no video, just blackness.

I thought for once maybe my internet screw up, but it seems that we are not alone.

The video is now playing but it's still using flash version which has next to now difference to the old player and quality is fugly low.

you can click on HD mode? And it is super odd your browser is defaulting to the flash player... does it not support HTML5?

I have no HD button. And I've tested different HTML5 players and all are working. Only the ModDB one is broken so it has to be a code issue with your video player.

Excellent work!
I like the new video player very much but I want to ask you if it could be possible to add feature which would allow us to open multiple videos after the end of the current video. I want to have that option because when I watch one Crysis video it showed me some nice videos but I can't open more than one so I would really like to see this implemented.

In YouTube if I want to watch other videos I could select multiple of them but not here (but I still think that Moddb is way better site).

Overall I think this is a great thing and I'm looking forward to improving this site (but I don't think there is something to improve because this site is great already).

Well that's a pity but it always showing same videos (fortunately) so it’s possible to just go back and click at the end of the video and then it’s possible to see those videos once again.

Btw: Moddb is one of my favorite websites along with Crymods and Nexusmods.

I have noticed there is something wrong with the length of our videos in the non-HD mode, it's like they cut off the first part of the video...

The video starts in the middle? This problem has happened to me very sporadically for a long time already, I have to come back at another time to be able to see the video.

It happened to me when I first saw this video: Moddb.com a few days later it was working. (and now, it happened again. :/)

Hmm that might be because of our caching system. I'll look into this and see if the video is getting cached at the wrong point
