Dev blog II! Talking about a major change that will be represented in 1.4.

Posted by on

Hello mod followers and supporters!

So it's been more then a month since the last update and as you can see when you look at the previews. Development never ceased on the next version 1.4. As always, I'm working on my own so this means that development of a new version takes time. But let's put that aside for now and fixture us a major change that will occur in the next version. Which will affect the Roman factions.

Regional Recruitment (Content)

In the new version, the Roman factions will get quite a change when it comes to the kind of troops that can be recruited in villages. As of now, Bellum Imperii is going to be taking a different approach and a more interesting one at that. (In my opinion that is)

It is as follows, as we all know. In history, the Roman Empire's army consisted of Romans citizens or farmers. But in any case, Romans. These formed the main levies of a Legion. Obviously there were Auxiliaries that were added to the legions, but the men of these Auxiliaries were recruited from the provinces beyond Italy. (Hope I described that a bit alright :p) Anyway, to the point. This is how it's going to be in version 1.4 as well.

Players will no longer be able to recruit roman levies that can be upgraded to legionnaires in the villages that are beyond Italy's borders. These will only be available for recruitment in Italy itself of course, so. If the player wants legionaires, it has to recruit in Italy or at some other places where they will be available. (There will be a couple of places outside Italy, still have to think on where these would be).

Because of this major change, there will be quite a few additional 'small' troop trees to accommodate this change. Here a list of territories that will have their own troop trees as of now:

- Egypt
- Spain
- Illyria
- Gaul
- Britannia
- Greece/Macedonia
- Thracia/Sarmatia
- Minor-Asia (Turkey)
- North Africa
- Crete
- Rhodes

So that was it for this blog, let me know your thoughts/feedback and any suggestions are as always. Highly appreciated!

Sounds very interesting. Historical accuracy is always good.

Didn't the Roman Empie recruited from roman citizen?
If yes, they didn't recruit only from Italy.

Yea I believe primarily any roman citizen could be a legionnaire and a good portion of them lived outside of Italy. I also believe there were reforms where those subjugated by the Roman empire had the chance to become Roman citizens through military service but that would still probably mean they served an auxiliary role. Although a few tribes I believe were organized and equipped similar to the legionaries roles due to their combat service but someone correct me if I am wrong.

Aye, that's why I said, that there will be a couple of regions beyond Italy's borders where you can still recruit Roman Levies. ^

Yes, but wasn't there a Emperor that granted citizenship to a whole territory?

IN 212 A.D. the Emperor Caracalla issued an edict granting full citizenship to all freed men and women within the empire. As for the time period of this mod Roman citizenship had varying degrees only the Cives Romani had full legal rights (not all of them). As for recruitment roman citizenship was assigned to different tribes and people (in short recruitment was common as many legions were raised and continued recruiting in their provinces for centuries. As for implementing this in a game I think the best Idea would to have that option at cities to recruit the elite troops make, my opinion on how to do this would be make this the place to recruit legionnaires (or whatever troop on that tree) And if possible and not too strenuous it would be more realistic to move that function to castles. (P.S. The new towns and armors look amazing, can't wait to stain my shiny new lorica with barbarian blood).

Territories that had been in roman hands for a long time some places over 250 years had been extremely romanised. At least in the major cities. People who lived in these areas had a watered down citizenship in 161AD. But they still had the right to join as full legionaries getting all the regular bonuses including post service bonuses. This was in some areas of Spain, Greece, West Balkans, North Africa and Southern France.

Totally right :-) And some noble gauls served as Legionnaries, for example Vercingetorix served in a legion when he was young, and it is why he fought pretty well caesar !

Would it be possible, to grant citizenship to a settlement (by, like, building an expensive improvement), that would then allow to recruit roman levy ?

It is good, but might cleaning up the existing multitude of troop trees be a bigger prioirty?
There are still some bugs and "to-do"-s there.

What's wrong with the current ones? Of course it would be a priority but to my knowledge at the moment the troop trees of the factions are pretty solid. Made change according to bug reports/suggestions in the previous patch if I didn't miss anything. So if there are still oddy's and bugs in some trees. Please let me know!

Yes, the previous patch fixed the trees alright. However, the new factions from 1.3 need a fix (I sent a bugreport on the official forum)
