For a long time we have seen the success of games and mods hinge on timely updates and a big buildup prior to releasing key demos and files. Starting today, you can now control your downloads and addons destiny on ModDB and IndieDB!
If you are an established member, instead of waiting for a site administrator to check your file - you now control it's release date. You can even set a date in the future which you can see demonstrated here. This means you can:
- Submit your download
- Set the date you would like it to go live (see image below)
- Then focus your efforts on building hype and linking people to the download page knowing that exactly on that date your file will be live
We hope this empowers our users and if it goes well will look to extend the functionality to the news system so you can post directly onto the homepage. Enjoy!
Awesome!
Cool thingy!
Very good feature. Thanks, Mod DB team.
Sounds good
Its cool utility, thanks
Good to see it was quite a pain to synchronise IndieDB download links, news articles, etc. with the rest of the social networks for this very reason.
Hell yeah! I hope you're able to start looking into extending to articles soon, that'll make things a lot easier. Would it be possible to have a system to parent media and downloads to articles so it all goes live when the article does? That could decomplicate us PR guys' lives a lot, especially with that recent dedicated image uploader update.
Looks great.
Very Nice!
*Now able to set exact date when files will go live* Youtube.com
Cool!
Great! Would love to see this for images, videos and even entire news! :)
What's the definition of an "established member"? :)
That'd be a great news! Because my news for my game "Demetrios" was never put on the main page, not knowing why (although I suspect it was maybe a little short, I'll try and do better next time)
You need to have been a member of the site for a while, this feature isn't open to new accounts to prevent abuse.
Also homepage is about the quality of your post, short articles lacking images, bad formatting etc are not of homepage quality
Sounds like a count down to me :D is it possible to have one for this kind of uploads ? otherwise it is a nice touch !
Sweeeeeeet :) timing is everything in this business...
Nice to see this feature. While I like the feature I really do not like telling people to "hype" their stuff. "hype" = "bad quality needing big talk to look good". Mods/Indie are about quality not producing hot air one has to hype up to look good.
The good feature, the best feature.
Excellent work guys. Thanks a lot!
Anyone else who would like to have those upcoming downloads with a timer displayed to site visitors and guests without having to share links/buttons? ;-)
Thank you for this, it feels like a realy useful improvement to ModDB.
I used this feature is the latest release of my mod and still found myself waiting for the news article about the release waiting for authoriszation once the download went live.
It would make this much more usefull if we were to have a scheduled release of news articles too, so the download becomes available at the same time news gets posted.
I'm hoping you implemented these countdowns in such a way they can be applied to anything in the ModDB CMS.
Is there any chance of the download link/button showing the countdown ? Maybe add some scripting to the link that replaces the image with a countdown.
On a related topic, I was releasing 2 version of my mod (a Zip file and an installer), when I added both links to my article I realise the buttons don't acutually show the name of the download, just the number of downloads. Please can we have the download name included on the button.
Thinking of button improvements, please can we have the number of comments included too (in a much smaller font of course).
Here's a mockup I just made for what I have in mind
Moddb.com
hey, so I think your suggestions are all great. We shall extend this to the news system and adding a countdown button would be really cool. Will think about how we can do that - but pleased you liked the change
Very helpful, ModDB. Much appreciated.
Nice! This'll really come in handy
