Hello everyone!
Welcome to the first devlog for our upcoming game, "The Fisherman".
We are excited to share with you the progress we have made so far and what we plan to achieve in the coming weeks.
"The Fisherman" is a 3D narrative-driven, exploration game where players take on the role of a young Portuguese fisherman during the heyday of cod fishing fleets in the 1940s.
Story and Setting
The Fisherman is set in the Nordic seas, and follows the story of a young man who must take on his recently deceased father's job as a fisherman to financially support his family. As World War II takes place, the fishermen set sail to the Nordic seas, knowing it's not ideal, but necessary for their families. Throughout the game, you will explore the ship, interact with various fishermen, and learn about the time-appropriate context and perspectives of the sailors. The game is inspired by the true story of the ship called Maria da Glória, which was sunk by the Germans in 1942.
Gameplay
In "The Fisherman," players will explore the ship, gather resources to go fishing, and interact with various fishermen. One of the core gameplay mechanics is the fishing minigame, where players have to catch a certain number of fish to progress through the story. The game will feature a linear structure, following three different moments in the day of this fisherman. In the first and third moments, the gameplay is focused on the fishing minigame, and in the second moment, the gameplay is focused on exploring the main vessel.
Development Progress
Over the past few weeks, we have been working on the game's core mechanics, including the fishing minigame. Our team has been busy creating art concepts of the various ships that you'll encounter in the game. We want to make sure that the ships are as accurate as possible, so we've been doing a lot of research to ensure that they're historically accurate.
In fact, our team recently visited the Codfish History Interpretation Centre to support the veracity during the game story. We learned a lot about the history of cod fishing and the impact it had on the Nordic seas. This will help us to create a more authentic and immersive experience for players.
Next Steps
Moving forward, we plan to continue working on the fishing minigame, adding more complexity to the different fishing locations. We will also be creating the different NPCs that players will interact and finish up the 3D models of the ships. We'll keep you updated as we make progress.
