Layers of Fear

Early access game review

Game Review: ★★★★★ (5/5 Stars)
What to say about this game... I'm not even really sure where to begin. The game started out so nice and calm and then suddenly turned into a living nightmare - just the way we horror freaks like it.

Layers of Fear is a first person atmospherical horror game that takes psychological horror to a new level. Each part of the game is scarier than the last, reaching from a relaxing and nice atmosphere to a nightmare one just wishes to escape. I'm partially sad and happy that I've completed the game for this exact reason.
The various and often unexpected jumpscares really hit the spot and with the atmosphere and the great use of silence as a source of anxiety one responds severely even to things that aren't in any way frightening under different circumstances.
The story is addictive and well written, yet confusing. One somewhat finds out what's going on but what's truly the matter remains unknown... to me anyways.
The graphics are absolutely great. Nothing more to say to that.
The sounds and atmosphere was extremely intense.
The gameplay took some getting used to for me, but it was alright once I'd figured it out a little.

Bottom line: I'll definitely play Inheritance and can only recommend this game to any horror lover.

The Cows Are Watching

Game review

What can I say about this game. To be honest, I am really sad writing this review the way I will, because this is the first game I've ever received a free key for, and I was super excited about that. However, no matter how I turn and twist this game, I can not figure out a way to review this game and actually recommend for anyone to buy it.

Basically, The Cows Are Watching, is a cow tipping simulator with little to no variation. It's a constant chase scene that varies between being chased by a dog and a boar - depending on whether you're inside a meadow or on the path. You get 4 different meadows that each lead to an area filled with cows and a very slow guard dog. Your task: Enter each of the meadows and tip the required amount of cows over within the time limit without being caught by one of the animals.

Never minding the impossibility of the idea of tipping a cow while running past it and slightly pushing it while running away from a dog, there is absolutely no variation in this game. Each of the meadows has the exact same colored cows in them, each of the dogs looks, sounds and acts exactly the same and the pig spawns in the same positions each round. There is no randomization of the cows' positions, and you basically do the exact same thing in the exact same order each round, adding a few cows to tip every time.

The horror element of the game is completely missing - while basically presenting you with the scenario of a permanent chase scene and the occasional quick scare from being caught by a dog, the game isn't scary at all. The flashlight does very little to counter the extreme darkness and the brightness has to be maximized to actually see what you're doing.

Unfortunately for the game, the element of humor that might have saved it from a 1-star review and a thumbs down on steam, is also undiscoverable. While the game presents a short period of amusement during its first levels, that initial comic impression quickly transforms into frustration and even boredom.

To sum it up: Sadly one of the worst games I have ever played, and - even worse - way overprized.

Coma:Mortuary

Game review

Coma: Mortuary.... if this is what the afterlife looks like, I do not want to die.

In a very confusing scenario we descend deep into the world of the dead. Are we dead ourselves? Are we a living soul trapped in the world of the dead, unable to find our way back to the world of the living? Are we being punished for our wrongs in life in this prison hell? We do not get conclusive answers as we make our way deep into the underground of the afterlife, trying our best to stay alive... or whatever state of consciousness we possess.

The atmosphere in this 1-hour horror game is fantastic, and the graphics and great voice acting contribute to the effects of the numerous jumpscares and intensity of the chase scenes that await in this game. While this clearly is a walking simulator (as advertised!) with little actual interaction with our environment and no actual riddles or difficult tasks, the game still convinces with its great execution and intriguing ideas of what might happen after death and why.

In my opinion, the price is a little too high for the 1 hour of gameplay this game brings, but if bought on sale, the game is very much worth it.

The Old Tree

Game review

This is a very short atmospherical Indie game in which the player is able to aid and observe the journey of what I call the apple alien baby up the old tree.

The game is point&click; with rather little interaction, no dialogue and about 10-15 minutes of playtime.

Despite the simplistic interaction with the game, the game is extremely nice to play. One is easily able to immerse oneself into the game due to the very nice and soothingly calm soundtrack.

I recommend this game for anyone who would like to just sit back and relax for a couple of minutes.

Lucius

Game review

Lucius... A game I very much looked forward to playing. Banned in my country, I had to go through a friend's account to gain access to it, but the effort seemed worth it. The concept: Amazing. The graphics: Alright. The gameplay: Acceptable. The bugs: HELL. The game has a very nice concept - it really brings a bit of change into the world of horror games. However, the amount of bugs encountered in this game make it unenjoyable. To be honest, if I hadn't done this for YouTube, I would not have continued at multiple occasions.

Too bad, because - again - I really enjoyed the concept of this game and was very much looking forward to playing it.

The Cat Lady

Game review

This game is one of the best games ever. When I first played it ages ago, I was so impressed I hovered over it for days after completing it. The way it is made, in its abstract way, portraying mental disorder, depression and hardship, and never really giving you a real clue at what's truly happening, is mindblowing. The end of this game is absolutely amazing. It's one of the most motivating endings to any game there is, and the idea to end it with the words "Press Any Key To Live" just makes you feel like by going back into real life you're continuing the game.

This game and its story really stay with you way after finishing it. Every time you think back, you feel a hint of motivation and joy.

I have to say, this has become one of my favorite games of all time.

Fingerbones

Game review

I have to admit that I was fairly disappointed by this game. There were some great reviews and everything pointed to this being a great even though short psychological horror game. I didn't mind the graphics, which are quite bad, the music that never seemed to really change, and the sound effects that were literally almost non-existent and when existent looping in very short loops. It's an indie game, right?

However, I was expecting a somewhat more thrilling story and a little more gameplay than it ended up being. It took me just over 10 minutes to get through the game, and not even the implications of rape and murder were really getting to me the way they were delivered.

In the end, I recommend the game since maybe some people really enjoy it and it's not terrible, but for myself personally this was just disappointing.

Understanding

Game review

It was extremely short, only one location and nothing much to do. I liked the way it was executed, but in general I just don't think it is enough for a game - it was just by far too short.

I am sorry for the bad rating, as I understand that this was just meant as a mother's day gift, but I really just can't give this more because it was incredibly short, uneventful and would have been boring if it had been longer.
