I think the best solution resides in pre-order bonuses (but nothing like more maps, a special weapon/armor and such since it could just be pirated as well). I heard somewhere that a game (i dont remember wich one) had a great idea... the more copies they sold in pre-order, the sooner they were to release the game.
since the game wasnt out yet people couldnt pirate it and those who could not stand waiting could contribute to get it released sooner
Thats the kind of concept that indie games should think about but those games would need to have a demo that shows a lot since people usualy pre-order games they know they will like.
