Update : It seems that Avast is falgging everything compiled with mingw32 as a 'suspicious file'. I submitted the application to the company as a false positive, but there is not much else I can do at the moment. Next version I release will be compiled with the newer version of mingw and see if that helps. If you are worried about viruses, you can always download the xenos source from the official site and compile the engine yourself. ^^

It seems the new avast anti-virus update is falgging this as suspicious file and not allowing people to download it. I will try to figure out what the problem is and post an update as soon as possible.

Xenos 1.2 was last built for Debian 6.0, so it is a bit out of date. Updating it to a more current distro is definitely something on my todo list.

Unfortunately my todo list is several hundred lines deep at the moment, so it might take me a while before I can check that task off.

Mine too! Along with Final Fantasy Tactics, I have played a lot of Shining Force, Disgaea, XCOM:Apocalypse... and of course I draw a lot of inspiration from the tabletop greats, like Space Crusade, D&D/Star Wars Miniatures, 'clix, and Star Fleet Battles!

Absolutely! The rules were actually based off tabletop miniatures games so naturally lend themselves for pvp style battles. However the original version of the game was created for a code jam, and I took a lot of shortcuts programming it, so the resulting game was rather sloppy on the inside.

Since adding multiplayer would take a major re-write of the underlying application structure, I decided to address the other areas of the game that needed improvement at the same time.

Hence, Dungeon Tactics 2.0 is a ground up re-write of nearly every aspect of the game. If multiplayer is not included in the 2.0 release, it will be available shortly after.

Unfortunately the selection of art assets available to use is extremely limited; I am currently exploring other options, but for the moment the only thing to do is try and create the best game possible with what we have to work with.

For now the bright flowery art style will have to stand in contrast to the dark and brutal storyline. Personally, I would add blood fountains and dismemberments if I thought I could pull it off.

Definitely! I just uploaded a new version, but have mostly focused on making the gameplay better rather then adding more content.

The terrain is made using 3d objects. This method will allow future development to include support for multi-story interior rooms and exterior areas with z-axis movement.

The characters are currently billboard sprites, but they could be easily swapped out for 3d models.

Thanks! A tutorial is definitely on the todo list; due to the time constraints of the contest I opted to leave it out of the first version. My logic was a tutorial is only useful once, while fun gameplay will last forever, once you learn how to play.

Here are the instructions from the readme file.

Click on the start zone to deploy a mob.
Clear a map by defeating all enemy mobs, or by sending a friendly mob into the exit zone.
Pick up as much loot as you can, and upgrade your mob's gear often.
Special abilities require SP to activate.
SP does not regenerate until the end of a match so use it wisely.

Just because an industry is not currently profitable does not mean that it can't be revitalized. Otherwise consoles would have ended in the crash of 1983 and all the subsequent devices would have never been made. Dual Stick shooters were dead until geometry wars revitalized the genre.

Maybe Schafer will be able to pull it off, maybe not. In any case, I am very excited to see what will come out of the project. If it succeeds then it might set a new standard for game developers. But of course if it fails it will 'prolly take kickstarter down with it..
