If you set the units quality to medium and so the environment you can manage to fight wtih 10k men and more at the same time. This change the distance at wich the textures replaced with sprites. I played Barbarian Invasion with unlimited men on battlefield.

The ending battle with Hannibal is very hard to PC even if you have the newest hardware it doesn't help. Set lower graphical settings. The game engine doesn't use newest tehnologies like 4 cores of processor. It can not use more then 3 GB of memory and more then one core of processor.
