There are many games out there, and I am proud to say that I play many of them. Be it with dice, controllers, or a mouse; I am a gamer, no doubt about it. Over the years I have amassed a mighty collection, each game meaning something to me. There are games that confuse me (R.U.S.E.), there are games that bore me (Space Marine), and there are games that disappointed me (Binding of Issac). Now of course where there is bad, there is also good. Games I enjoy the few times I play them (Trackmania 2), games that surprised me (Dawn of War), and games I can always pull out and play no matter my mood (Minecraft).

However, as many may notice, there are games I truly love. Some (Skeybar) even claim I am addicted to them (and he may not be too wrong). The games that pulled me in so deep I can’t get out. There are several games that you’ll see me play on an almost daily basis; Fallout New Vegas, Empire at War, Command & Conquer 3 (with Tiberium Essence of course!), and most prominently Team Fortress 2.

However, as of late, a new game has risen to be alongside the giants. A new experience I am stuck to playing, and I doubt I’ll leave it anytime soon. That game is the small Indie title called FTL: Faster Then Light.

When MattmanDude bought me this game during the Steam Sale, I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve seen bits of the game across the web but nothing to give me a good idea of what I would be doing. So I installed it (of which took 3 minutes) and started it up. On first appearance the game looked small and quaint; simplistic graphics and an 80’s style techno-retro soundtrack playing softly in the background. I played the tutorial and found the controls straight forward. The gameplay wasn’t flashy but it did what it needed to do.

Then I started a new game.

I found myself in command of the Kestrel; a Serenity-esque starship with a crew of 3 humies and some basic weapons. After assigning my little pixelated crew to their tiny consoles I fired up my hyperdrive and headed towards the nearest beacon. My first star system and a ship that needed some fuel to get home. Being a goodie two-shoes I parted some gas and prepared to make way. Then I landed in the lap of a pirate. Going to a mental red alert I armed my little laser cannon and missile launcher. We sat staring at each other while the weapons charged. Luckily my weapons were faster and I got off the first shot, laser blinking off the enemy’s shields and my missile veering off course. Great, my tactical officer is cross-eyed. Then the pirate returned the favor, firing a similar array of ordnance. Since apparently I got my shield generator from the 99 cent planet, the enemy laser quickly depleted my barriers while a torpedo put a new window in my life support room. Sending my engineer to fix the leak I ordered another barrage. This time our missile landed in their shield generator while the laser disabled their weapons. A few more exchanged of laser fire and I had my first destroyed ship under my belt.

Then I jumped into a star going through a minstrel cycle and found my ship turned into the USS Inferno, toasting my crew. Well, things escalated quite quickly didn’t it?

This defeat did not deter me, I went and tried again. And again. And again. Every time I think my ship was set for life before dying to some random event. One time I finally reach the end, the goal the game wanted me to reach. Thinking I finally won, I then received a new objective; destroy the enemy flagship.

Wait…. What? I just went through Hell and a Half to get this stupid data to you and now you want me to engage the enemy head on? You’re a bunch of loonies!

After my grumble I went ahead and hunted down this flagship. The “good guys” were nice enough to fix my ship (which was nearly dead when I got there mind you) but left me with no proper firepower. I then see it; a monster of a vessel nearly double my size and triple my firepower. I was dead within 30 seconds.

So I learned that FTL is hard, unforgiving, and had a tendency to kick you in the nether regions on the roll of a virtual die. However did I quit? Surprisingly no. I jumped back in, fired up the warp core and went for round 35. I was hooked. I couldn’t win, but I was having the time of my life. I truly felt like Picard or Reynolds, faced with life or death situations that could make me rich or send me to the scrap yard. The simple universe the game offered was fascinating to explore; encountering the Klingon-like Rock folk, Romulan Rip-off Zoltans, or the Jabba-wannabe Slugs. And of course the Mantis men, nightmare fuel that love to board and rip my poor crew a new one. Every round felt like a story, and no 2 rounds were the same.

I eventually did find a way to defeat the endgame Flagship (thank you cloaking devices and friendly Mantis Men) and almost got high on endorphin release. I beat the game.

Then what did I do?

I jumped back in!

In a conclusion, FTL is challenging but insanely fun for folk like me. The simplistic looks hide a truly deep game. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good adventure without paying a crap ton of money or needing a NASA-level computer.

Of course, while I’m writing this, another game that Matt bought me (what a nice feller, thanks mate!) is installing. Oblivion. Will this game have the same effect on me as FTL has currently? Only time will tell.

A Generation Behind

In the high-technology, left-winged, similar thought process world that is the 21st
century, I do have to say I am an oddity. Not really an oddity in terms of
size, shape, language, or strength, but an oddity in thought. Others see my
thoughts and opinions as old, outdated, and harsher than those of the common
student. Why do I have this brain that calls the world messed up? Why does it
say that “these kids don't know anything about life around them?” Why are my
writings considered similar to that of an older man? I think I know the cause,
my Grandfather.

Unlike other children who were raised by a standard family unit of a mother, father,
and siblings, I was raised with Grandparents and my Mother. My parents got
divorced while I was at an incredibly young age, so me and my mother moved in
with my grandparents. We stayed this way for years. To me, my “father” was my
Grandfather, “mother” my Grandmother, and my actual Mother felt more like a
very older sister. My mother worked as a nurse during the graveyard shift at a
children's hospital, so thereby I didn't see her too often between work and
sleep. I was at home with my Grandmother mostly throughout the day, until
Grandpa walked through the door at 6 o' clock sharp every evening. One could
easily see this as a typical family, with a bit of age and generation
modifications.

It is common knowledge that young boys
typically look toward their father for advice. Now, around the late 1990s and early
2000s when I was raised, a typical father would have ideals and experiences
relevant to their generation, IE late 70s and 80s. His stories would be focused
around events like the space shuttle program, early video games, and the fall
of the USSR. Well, my “father” was raised in the late 50s and 60s. His memories
include things like Vietnam, Civil Rights, and the Apollo programs. It's clear
there's a bit of a gap between my evening tales of adventure and the kid next
door.

It is known that over time, America as a country has changed. In the early days of
small towns and post-war economy, children and teenagers had to mature early
and get a job young in order to be successful. They also had a slightly more
relaxed free time. Law enforcement was lighter and kids could do many things
like go out shooting next door or have a 100 mile per hour drive in the outer
parts of town. However with urbanization and increase in life expectancy,
younger kids don't need to know so much about life right off the bat, they have
a more relaxed lifestyle in terms of education. However they have lost the
ability to do some activities that the last generation enjoyed. For example,
discharging a firearm near any sort of civilization (which is more widespread
thanks to urbanization) is seen as a felony. Instead, the newer generations
have gone to more electronic forms of entertainment such as arcades and a
larger film industry.

So, when it came to quality time with my “father,” we did things he did when he was
young. Instead of buying some sort of game system, he taught me how to play
chess. He also believed that early life skills and knowledge were still needed,
and maturing should be quick. He believed that I needed to know a wide
assortment of topics that most others get to in middle or high school, if at
all. He taught me to “man-up” in most situations and watch for myself.
Also being retired a retired submariner, I got more than a handful of
questionably-appropriate sea tales with a side of technical knowledge.

When I entered a more public world with schooling, a generation gap could be easily
felt. While most kids knew all 100-some
odd pokemon by heart, I knew how to hold and fire an older BB rifle. During
middle school when most kids barely knew basic mathematics, I already had basic
knowledge of how nuclear reactors function. My sense of maturity and
self-dependence led me to be slightly awkward in the social circle as well.
While most kids were focusing on trivial things like some attractive female or
some new video game coming out, I focus on getting work done. Personally,
though some see this awkwardness as a downside, I see this rough and early
maturity and knowledge as a positive. If need be, I could go out in the world
and roughly know how to make things work. Most teenagers today have a hard time
getting out from behind the Playstation and into the world.

Blog Update: RTS, PS3, and TF2T

Vader91 Blog 2 comments

Well, though the situation on my end is nowhere near as good as before, but things are calming down quite a bit. So I might as well give y'all an update one what I've been up to.

First off let me explain the trio (duo, see below) of pics here. For Valentine's day my folks gave me a gift card for Amazon.com and I'm about to use it. After contemplating what to buy, I came across 3 games that intrigued me, and was within the budget. I've had a RTS itch for the past while (if you didn't figure that already with the RA3 picture and my SOSE steam screenshots) and I hunger for new blood. C&C Generals 2 won't be out for eons, so I must resort to older games. Luckily they be dirt cheap nowadays. I haven't ordered them quite yet, but they will be on my hard drive soon. UPDATE: The order has been placed and should be here next week, if not sooner.

First off is World in Conflict (with the Soviet Assault expansion built in) - an epic looking game set in 1989 with a story line all to similar to my WIP card game March of the Reds. EDIT: Due to shipping complications, I had to drop this game in order to have enough money to buy the other 2 (it was being sold through Amazon, but shipped from another place, which would've skyrocketed shipping costs) so I got a book instead.

Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War, the complete edition
- a cult classic, this long-running RTS series is on the same level as Command & Conquer and Starcraft. Who hasn't heard of the Space Marines in over sized armor with chainsaw swords? I've always wanted to get into the Warhammer 40K universe after my initial exposure with the PSP game Squad Command, and now it's cheap enough I can dive in.

Dawn of War II Gold Edition - Similar to previous title, but with better graphics, a new storyline, and a different play style (more RPG and small squads compared to the en masse armies of the original game).

I don't plan on becoming a Warhammer cultist like some other folk I know, but I like the concept and after taking a closer look, and being disappointed with, at the TPS Space Marine the RTS lane is the only way to go game wise (miniatures FAR too expensive). This little bundle only comes out at around $35, pocket change compared to their original prices.

In related news, as allowance I got a nice USB headset yesterday, so I can yell at all of you in higher definition on TF2 and I can boss you around on the PS3, lol. Hopefully this weekend I can get the first episode of the Redneck Rant up, but I ain't making promises.

Finally, a little tidbit on TF2 Tactics. The game is almost ready for Release 1 (I know it's like crying wolf now, but give me a break here) since PurpleKirby54 jumped on board. Currently all that is left to do is modify the Medic's stats and finish up a few maps.

Alright, that's all for now. I will see you all on the battlefield!

Starting to Smell even more of Commies around here...

Vader91 Blog
Wow, Moddb (along with the rest of the net) has definitely been on fire as of late. All of course for good
reason; another half-arsed piece of legislature that's trying to go up against the internet once again. If you don't know what I'm talking about, get out of your Skyrim and Minecraft and look around.
Hell, even the Google home page as well as Moddb's header declare the situation all to well.

Now, being the loose-cannon rebel I am, you would probably expect some video or at least a picture montage bashing DC like usual. I would, but other things are in the way (Midterms) and another project is using up my free time (TF2 Tactics). Odds are though, I'll make something in the near future, or
at least mention it in the first broadcast of Paradise Ranch PR Radio.

Now of course I can't let ya leave without my two cents can I? Usually no, but I will save this for
PRPRR and the Redneck Rant. I'll explain my position there, Hell may even record early tonight.

Vader91 Signing out

for now...

‘Tis the Season to be Critting

Vader91 Blog 1 comment

I haven’t really posted a proper “blog” page for quite some
time, so I might as well dig it out and give a small update on life while the
Holiday Seasons roll in.

JSSG has grown to 8 Members, double the size of when it was
founded. Quite an improvement I say. The following Members have joined outside
the original 4 (in order of joining)

Admiral Skeybar (represented by a RED Pyro)

PurpleKirby54 (represented by a RED Engineer)

sovietCake (will be represented by a BLU Pyro)

Some other guy who Kirby has yet to tell me the name of (will
be represented by a RED Medic)

Because of the growth, I set up a small, invite-only group
on Steam so it’s easier to plan larger events like the (ended up failing,
though practice was fun) Battle Royal.

Second order of business; the status of Champion Games

Team Fortress 2 Tactics is close to a beta release. The Beta
will include 6 weapons per class, the stock weapons and the class update
weapons, exceptions being the Sniper and Demoman. Sniper will receive, in
addition to stock, the Sydney Sleeper, Jarate, and Bushwacker. Demoman will
receive, in addition to stock, the Loch-and-Load, Scottish Resistance, and
Ullapool Caber. Currently a simple-artwork version of 2fort will be the initial
map. An improved version (with Badwater hopefully) will come with the full
release of the game. DO NOT ASK FOR A RELEASE DATE PLEASE, AS I HAVE NO IDEA
WHEN THAT WILL BE
. Luckily Kirby has jumped aboard to help me get the game
finished, so progress could pick up.

March of the Reds has been redesigned to be a bit simpler.
Nothing to show visually yet.

I have also stared sketching down ideas for yet another
game. This time, it will be a science fiction RPG-type cooperative game. It has
influence from a particular computer game as well. I’m keeping the title and
what-not confidential for the time being.

Finally, a bit of Personal updates.

I be praying to get a PS3 this Christmas, and the cards seem
to be dealing in my favor for that regard. I be chugging through my senor year
of high school, all fair so far.

Kirby and I have started coming as TF2 classes to the
school’s “Board Game Marathons” (basically 4 hours of games of all kinds,
including video games). The first one we went as Engineer (me of course) and
Scout (Kirby had one hell of a convincing costume). The second one (coming up
in 2.5 weeks) is a smaller marathon, so we be switching it up going as Spyper
and Intelligent Heavy (from Minifett’s classic Gmod vids). I already got a
bullet belt picked out and currently searching for a good pot. Kirby has a
decent Sniper costume, so he just needs to hunt down a good mask. Pictures may
come, eventually. Other planned combos;

Tin Soldier and Sniper
Heavy and Medic

Anyhow, that be enough from me. If you’re interested in
catching a game with me, currently I be lurking around in Alien Swarm and
Minecraft. ALWAYS expect me to be on TF2 on the weekends (or slow school
nights).

Cya on the battlefield!

You found the local Rebel Redneck! Congrats!

Welcome Welcome! Here be my coffee stain on the great road map of Moddb.

First off, I would like to thank ye for stopping by for whatever reason you found necessary. I am a proud member of the following groups (in the groups section, go figure) I am a “play-for-fun” gamer using my PSP, PS2, and my laptop. I am a good fan of the Civilization and the Command and Conquer games.

Also, I am a STAR WARS and STAR TREK addict to the utmost extreme. (Seriously, who else has a Darth Vader lightsaber replica hanging from their ceiling by fishing wire, and dresses up as Scotty whenever he finds time to do so?)

I am also a huge LEGO fanatic, one whole wall of my room is covered with 'em. I prefer to make my own models, some of which you can find in the “images” section.
I also am a heavy Board Game/Card game player, playing Risk and whatnot as often as Star Wars Battlefront (any, I have 'em all!) I am also currently designing 3 games myself (A Star Trek card game, a Cold War gone Hot Strategy game, and a fishing game based on the TV show Deadliest Catch)

I am currently studying Graphic Design at my High School, and taking Honors classes with it.

My Military knowledge mainly came from personal study, and the fact I live next door to an Air Force base.

As for what I read? Well, I am in the middle of 10 Star Trek novels I got for cheap at D.I. Authors I read and enjoy are: Mark Twain, Robert A. Heinlein, Jules Verne and then H.G. Wells.

As for my well-known American ferocity? Well, my ancestry has something to say of that. If you have browsed my image gallery, you would know my Grandfather was in the US submarine forces. Well, along with that, my Great-Uncle (never saw him in my life personally) was a tank driver for Patton's army during WW2 (and he hated every minute of it!)and was the first tank across the Rhine river. Newly found out, another relative died on Omaha beach, and another was a cook on a Liberty ship. As a final note, I am a direct descendant of one of the men who fired the Shot Heard Around the World.

The rest of my family came across the plains to Salt Lake. So yes, I am a several generation Latter-Day-Saint (commonly called Mormons) and dang-proud of it!
I will admit now, I am commonly called the “loose-cannon” so pardon me if I offend anybody.
Anyhow, got any questions, just ask below, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Play on my fellow gamers!
