The Stanley Parable

Game review

I think I got most of the endings. There were only a few more apart from the original that I found, even after spending all day on it looking for more. It's very interesting for an hour or two, but the $12 I paid (and full price $15?) seems like a lot to ask for what the game offers. I had higher expectations. Maybe it's because I was desensitized to some dialogue after remembering it from the mod. I wish I could find more endings because I feel like I'm missing so much. It looks like there's a lot there, a lot everywhere, when most of the time there's nothing important there. So many buttons and props that have nothing to do with the story but are there to troll you. I did that input puzzle until I reached the buttons room and I still don't know what that's all about. And I wish there was at least some filtering on the shadows so they wouldn't have such jagged edges. But overall this is a decent game. Just don't expect it to behave like a regular game.

(I think my favorite part is when the narrator took me to "someone else's game". That part really surprised me.)

Thomas Was Alone

Game review

Thomas Was Alone is a very interesting game. It's about performing simple puzzles with quadrilateral blocks. No, that's not the interesting part. The blocks have personalities and feelings and backstories. Through the narration of this fascinating story a rather simple generic game is brought to life in ways that surprised me. The music was excellent as well and definitely helped the atmosphere. My only complaints would be how some puzzles were overly simple while others, especially in the last chapter, were a bit tedious. In fact, the last chapter shouldn't even be in this game. The ending would make a lot more sense without it. But this game was still an enjoyable experience.

The Walking Dead

Game review

This was a good game. I thought I would be tired of it after a little while because of too many zombies but I soon found that it had a very rich set of characters with complex stories which grabbed my attention.

The graphics were not all that impressive but I won't mark down on that.

The final episode I would give a 10, the others a 9.

One Late Night

Game review

I never managed to finish this game. Some of the puzzles were really hard, the monster was not all too scary, and the game lagged a lot all in this one small map.

But the map was well designed and the story was kind of interesting. I had some fun with it for a while.

Dear Esther

Game review

It is almost exactly like the old mod except with better graphics, but they were stunning graphics.

I got it with the HIB8. The game is maybe 2 hours long at max if you walk slowly.

I think the original price of $10 is way too high. This is more like a really fancy, empty movie. I wouldn't go to the theaters for that price if this was a movie.

Bastion

Game review

I got this with the Humble Indie Bundle V and had no idea how amazing it was until I got into playing it.

An incredible story set in an unique environment and bursting was creativity in every corner. This is a game that doesn't slow down.

As for the gameplay, though, it was nice to have many weapons to vary the battling, but still the customization is way too advanced for the length of the game. I maybe only used 3-5% of all the available tools during my first time playing through. Some creatures like that dragon that popped up under you were annoying and hard to defeat.

But all together this was an amazing piece of art that immersed my senses in its tale, including emotionally.

Silent Escape: Induction

Game review

This was absolutely stunning. The voice acting, choreography, mapping, textures, and everything else was Valve quality. The story and cutscenes were pretty good as well. So far this is the best mod I have played based on the design of the real episode 2. You get my full approval.

The only things I am not entirely satisfied with are the length (which was kind of short but still very high quality), and that ship that was impossible to shoot down without cheating, for me at least.

Penumbra: Requiem

Game review

Keys, keys, and more keys.

This game has no monsters, no horror, and a very linear puzzle-based gameplay. It's very unlike the others. Its main purpose is to finish up the story of the series and it does that fairly well, although it may still be up to your interpretation. The new things include a bunch of dialogue and some new places and puzzles to try.

Penumbra: Black Plague

Game review

This game was long, dark, elegant, and deeply disturbing. There were several times I was genuinely startled. The monsters were frightening. Truly a great horror game.

The use of more secondary characters aided the story. The puzzles were complex but not extremely difficult, leading the player around large areas in a non-linear way. It was fascinating but sometimes it bombarded the player with too many details. I ended up with probably over a hundred pages of notes.

The dialogue was amazing, but I won't spoil anything about it. There were several places where the player is taken out of reality to solve puzzles somewhere else, again I won't say where. This was very fun.

I can't say the Amnesia is better than this. They are on par for being some of the best horror games I've played.
