On the positive side the game looks cute and the level design and hidden items seemed great but i wasn't sure what all the items did, add to score? Maybe there should be a counter to get you to look for all of them?
I like that the sack got larger the more you picked up.
For the checkpoints i would say to make a visual indication and a sound indication like a ping with a flag pole that raises or even just a boxed area that changes color when you enter.
