Well, such stereotype of Communist China relied on number to defeat their enemy could be traced back to the Korean War. Where the PLA employed human wave tactics against the more superiorly equipped UN force. Still I agree with what you said, as the PLA in Korean War is very different from the PLA fought in the First Chinese Civil War, which rely heavily on guerrilla warfare.
