To the Moon

Game review

This game is a perfect example of gameplay playing second fiddle to strong writing, a moving story, and outstanding sound design. If you have any kind of sentimental bone in your body, this game will move you and make you think. It's a vaguely sci-fi point and click adventure story about the dying wish of an old man, and the two scientists who fulfill that wish. It turns out to be more than they bargained for!

While there's only limited input necessary from the player, and relatively little that could be said to be "gameplay" in the traditional sense (a few tile-flipping puzzles), the rest of the game is so strong you'll hardly notice. A gem.

Hexcells

Game review

Hexcells is basically a cross between minesweeper and picross. It's a really fun though short puzzle game that will test your mind and leave you hungry for more. The only thing I wish it had was a button to highlight the row/column you are looking at. When hints apply to a diagonal row, it's really hard to tell what row you are on. Other than that, this is a brilliant game.

Legend of Fae

Game review

Legend of Fae is a very entertaining and challenging puzzle game. It features gorgeous sprite-based graphics and has a perfect blend of match-three puzzle and RPG combat mechanics in a fast-paced battle system. I enjoyed the story and character design, though the story is mostly just a framework for the rest of the game's puzzles and combat.

The only major gripes I have are the occasionally large difficulty spikes, which can be very luck-based and frustrating (especially the final boss), and that you HAVE to complete the game on hard to get the true ending. It's worth it, but it would have been nice to know that in advance, especially for such a challenging game.

Overall, well worth the price and a lot of fun and charm.

Noxious

Game review

A solid, short-form third person shooter. Not the best tech, but well-excecuted. It's nice to see a short action game that's not a Slender clone.

ILLUSION - Ghost Killer

Game review

Very low-tech, but extremely effective. Though this is another entry in the genre of "Find/do X things and avoid the scary guy" started by Slender, there's something about Jeff the Killer that is just scarier than the Slenderman. I guess it's the laugh and that *face*. Anyway, for a free fright, you can't go wrong with this one.

7Days

Game review

This game deserves great praise for several reasons. First off, it demonstrates that despite what AAA devolpers and publishers might have us believe, graphical advances are not necessary for better storytelling. This is sort of the 3D equivalent of such horror gems as After Dusk, Home, or Lone Survivor.

The basic gameplay is largely exploratory, though with a couple of slightly frustrating chase sequences. The scares are both of the unnerving psychological type, as well as some well done jump scares. Unlike in other short-form horror games, the atmosphere and presentation is so good that the jumpy bits never feel cheap, but are rather integrated into the story.

Overall, a very good horror game. Since you can't save, make sure you set aside about an hour give or take to play this one through.
