the game is in continue evolution and rebalancing. We surely aim to keep it fair for both paying and not paying users; this is also helped by the design of the game itself, since the concept of winning is not absolute. This means that although it is true that you can progress faster if you pay, it just means that you are going to fight sooner more experienced users.
