I am a composer and multi instrumentalist. My main musical interests lie in anything which takes my interest. From classical to rock to electronic to ambient and back with my added twist.

I really like the sounds you've used and your use of them.
When I was listening through this I thought the pedal point (on an Eb?)
was quite effective though however I spent the rest of the piece waiting for it to change to some hectic bass line. I felt it didn't do anything with the tension it built. Good work on the productions side to I thought it had a good sense of space.
Thumbs up from me.

I agree with bloodstalker, I really like the beginning. As the piece grew louder you started to hit the limiter rather hard I thought, the release was audible. I myself didn't have a problem with the drums, although having them prominent at the end I thought was an interesting contrast to the beginning.

I think this is your best yet
has a nice ambiance to it and I enjoyed hearing the differnt themes appearing at different places,
it blended together very well.
you might want to have a look at your levels going into the compressor that I'm assuming is on the master channel, there are a few points where it was dampening quite noticeably, the meters on my console were near full pretty much entire time so it might be fine to take things back a bit to try and add some more dynamic...just my opinion though...I do know some people who like that sound...
Keep up the great work...I need to get my act together and finish some pieces....

I picture this more as a sci-fi scene more than anything else, I think its the synths... It does a great job of setting a seen though it had my imagination going.

I like the base line, in particular how it fits in with the rest of the parts in the track.
I think the mix could use a bit of work, Latter in the track I found it hard to pick out the bass line, although I am listening with headphones at the moment so that could be the problem.
Otherwise I liked the synths too they in general they fit really well.
Post some more stuff up here for download ;)

OK my main piece of criticism would be that four blows on the horn is enough in fact it's possibly still too many.
I think it needs to change I would either start changing the horn part or add another part to build the tension. maybe both ;)

I like the start, peaceful.

I liked the end more...particular as it moved away from the more techno influenced tracks...its also not my kind of thing :).
It became allot more interesting as you stopped repeating as much.
I'd encourage you to try and keep heading in that direction.
keep up the good work!

I'll keep that in mind about the snare (maybe I'll secretly test it)
but I'm not sure if I want to use it ;)

I really like the dynamic range in the start, it gave it allot of character to the piece.
I think you should work on the middle section my main comment on it is that all the parts are moving in the same direction at the same time(or at least that's the impression I get). Try balancing there movements up and down. The bass is probably the best start. otherwise perhaps use the strings for a harmony to help balance out the movements.
I liked the level of repetition more in this it was allot more interesting.
Keep going with this one.

I spent the entire time waiting for it to explode....but then it stopped.... there's so much energy in that thing!
I think the_simians advice sounds pretty solid.
I want to here the finished version.

Nice work I really really like the depth of the audio in this, it fells quite alive.

I was wondering what you meant by "...intentionally NOT underscored."
What does that refer to?

I certainly could see it in a HL1 moment, though I find it a bit of a stretch to say that it sounds like the music from half life. Try to use longer phrases I think and you might be closer then. but my musings aside you've certainly made a great track for your first with some nice selection of sounds. Keep it up. ;)

~3:25 to 3:55 and ~4:50 to 5:00...now that I go through it again. lol I should have been more organized in my comment.

The piano and guitar I think are in unison there (correct me if I'm wrong I'm still honing my skills of interval recognition :( )
I'd recommend avoiding that unless you keep it well supported by another part. as both parts are moving in unison, they both move in the same direction at the same time witch isn't exactly exiting but more importantly it unbalances the piece.

So my main concern is really for the balance, be careful not to have too many voices all going down a or up at the same time with out a another voice moving in the opposite direction or not moving.

and if that doesn't make sense feel free to ignore it...

the Hyperlink URL is misspell and sends you to www.gareth-cocker.net instead of www.gareth-coker.net
no 'c' in coker.

Good choice on a composer. I've been getting a little worried about some mods lack of attention to music lately. I think this mod should be set on that front though.

This looks great, Chex quest was the first FPS I played and it was so much fun. I'd love to see this when it's done.
Best of luck and keep going.

I love the menacing sound of the heavy guitar and drums. I was wondering though why you had the piano and the guitar both playing in unison for a period with out any other accompaniment?

I kept thinking that the rest of the track sounded like space dock.

Funny you should mention browsing reason tutorials I've started and finished a piece since I posted that blog (though I still have to upload it). I saw one reason tutorial about creating a space echo effect which requires some use of feed back. Since then I've been experimenting more and more with feed back based synthesis. I found made some interesting stuff like a controlled feedback loop that has a passive form but gets more active when there's input. When the input dies down it goes back to normal. I'll have a look at uploading it.

Just to let you know you uploaded a .wav file rather than a .mp3 or some other compressed format so that file is allot larger than it needs to be.
