Visual, action art and poetry artist, Hugo Nadeau have shown his projects in Canada, United-States, Brazil and China. His works follows a path in wich a lot of permanent projects are initiated and maintained, mainly on the Web, serving a conceptual and symbolic view of art practice. Part of these permanent organisations are : H1N1 Conspiracy, Model Citizen Project, HNL (Hugo Nadeau League) and C.A.C.H.E. (Hugo's Hidden art center for Eternity). The artist is born in St-Zacharie, Chaudière-Appalaches and works in Montreal.

For me finding a place to live will always be the main quest, but I did planned severald "red lines", like breadcrumbs, that would lead you, if you chose, from any character to at least one community and the means to live in it. But these will be invested a bit later. I would love to have some characters revealed as relativea to some starting characters, and offer some unique dialogues too.

CREATION UPDATE : Hi everyone. Currently, the new bêta is being tested by a small group of people, and will be launched shortly here. It has over 200 quests and sub-quests, numerous QOL and other features, and already more than 150 fixes. Stay connected!

CREATION UPDATE : Hello all! I'm trilled to announce that I completed the programming of the entire set of quests for The Sum, a list of over 75 quests, most of them bringing the player to explore various areas of the worldmap. With the included hunger system, it will make traveling challenging as well as immersive, I hope so. For this, many places had to be improved and scripted with unique characters, items and events. Nothing out of this world, but those are tasks that will always give new insights on the game's numerous factions, and often react to the character you are playing, especially skills and traits. In the next days, I will include the new 45+ voices and test test test. Expect a closed beta for testing very soon. If you are interested to help with testing, please DM me 😄.

Unfortunately, only "local" quests are displayed, this is an engine thing. So you'll only be able to display quests where you received them, or where they lead you. I had plans for creating a journal a while back, but I needed a special function from Melindil, the creator of a script extender for Fallout Tactics using LUA code, but he eventually vanished and never worked on his extender again. I guess you'll eventually have to rely on the game's wiki (https://wikipedia2197.org), once all quests are properly added there.

CREATION UPDATE : Tought it would be a good time to give you a quick update on the progress to the Sum next BIIIG release! At this very moment, around 80% work is done on the +75 quests of the game! All quest givers (about 3 per community) have been programmed, and about half the job have been completed in scripting those +75 quests in the strange and weird places they ask the player to go... I'm keeping the most complicated ones for the end, like the numerous conflict quests of Estrie where the Brotherhood and the Red panthers fight, or the ones at the "Thunder dome", a recycled downloaded map that serves as a sacred fighting arena for the royalists of Carmor. When all this is done, I'm adding the +45 voices recently created, and just like that, half the intended dialogue lines will be done and included. The next version will also add some new features and quality of life additions, but not much. A notable one is a script to remove dead bodies to save memory and also add a tomb item for all your companions at their death. Never will you have to let them rot in the desert, unless you wanted it to end that way of course. Stay tuned, I will soon launch a secret demo to volunteers in the hope of removing all bugs before that BIG RELEASE.

Was it inside a random encounter? Unfortunately there is an engine bug there that makes all items with tagnames duplicated in a weird way, so I removed most random encounter guns.

Hi! For "flavor" reasons, but also to save on character voices, I do not plan on translating french dialogues in the future. But if someone is willing to do the work, I could be convinced to release a kind of "patch" with manual installation that would come with the game.

Hi and a good year to you! Ennemies respawn yess, but only in random encounters. There are some respawning merchants too there, for power gamers who want to have a steady supply of respawning goods. The power armor lore is a bit different, it is made of car parts, called Powered Carmor. And there is a "Nuclear suit" to be found in some very rare nuclear shelters on the worldmap too.

Hi! I'm afraid this is unlikely, as the game is a complex mix of french and english. I received some requests from a guy wanting to translate the game to polish recently, but not in spanish. There is some hope for a translation though, if some modder would like to try it after the full release. You see, most of the game's dialogues are listed in a google sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Loy4eu_CFHzxT52U5MFpGB_zRMZ7oC-mpday6dv9Tuw/edit?usp=sharing), and I know of a plugin to automatically translate each cell. It might be an interesting way to do most of the translation work.

Hi everyone. It's me, Tim (I mean, Hugo of course). And today I want to talk about : The BÊTA! Things are progressing immensely. I am not especially confident it will be out for Christmas ; crunch is good, but rushing things is not. Regardless, we are getting closer each minute! Basically a two persons' job at the moment (Benjamin J. Allard and me), I'm programming the quests as he is getting the voices ready to be integrated. I calculated that close to half of all the unique characters have a voice, and more will follow after the bêta. I chose to follow a systematic approach, so hard to tell exactly how many quests are done at this point, but all the dialogues are added already as well as the unique characters, in place with names and portraits. After that comes scripting and testing. I might call a few of you to test along with me, stay tuned!

Je ne suis pas très confiant quant à sa sortie pour Noël ; être empressé, c'est super, mais se garocher, ça non. Quoi qu'il en soit, nous nous rapprochons à chaque minute! C'est essentiellement un travail à deux pour le moment (Benjamin J. Allard et moi), je programme les quêtes pendant qu'il prépare les voix à être intégrées. J'ai calculé que près de la moitié des personnages uniques ont une voix, et d'autres suivront après la bêta. J'ai choisi de suivre une approche systématique, donc difficile de dire exactement combien de quêtes sont faites à ce stade, mais tous les dialogues sont déjà ajoutés ainsi que les personnages uniques, en place avec les noms et les portraits. Après cela, il y a les scripts et le testage. Il se peut que j'appelle quelques-uns d'entre vous à tester avec moi, restez à l'écoute!

You don't need any GOG version, it is standalone. You simply download the latest main .zip file (this file right here) and you are good to go! :D

Hi!
The game is in Alpha and on its way to be released in its beta state, with all its much needed quests! All have been written and translated, but not yet scripted. Some key locations of the game are also missing (Lead & Golden arches), but I plan on creating them in the next week. I will after that jump on quest scripting to officially complete the first beta verson :D

In fact, a third of the game's characters speak french, a third english and a third both. You must have been simply in french speaking communities at this point, but beleive me, there are many english speakers to find out there. The weapon ammos are not mixed up, they are just simplified (2mm, 5mm, 9mm, etc.). There might be some errors in bullet assignation here and there though, I could use a hand in finding those errors if you encounter them! Don't hesitate to report bugs in the link in the page's pinned article. This is as far as the game is yet yes, currently I am working on the beta release that will include the quests and all final locations.

Here proudly comes the new version of The Sum, 1.7.1a!
This will be the final preparation update before the BETA, which will include at last most if not all game's quests.

This new version fixes many bugs, more notoriously related to fleeing villagers and item's passive bonuses. It adds random encounter traders, a series of new options in "config.lua" (like no-tutorial mode, starting items, hunger mechanics) and many more things!

Hello hello!
A quick update about the coming version. My work on it is reaching its end. Yesterday, I completed the addition of two forms of random maps traders: independent sellers and also Capital's franchise stores called "All Caps". You can review their locations here: En.wikipedia2197.org. This will be useful to get ammunitions or some food on the road without being absolutely obliged to hunt or fish. And also to remove junk items from the game as these trader's inventories will respawn at each visit.

I am now taking care of implementing new triggers to make villagers flee when having been killed several times, without completely stopping to attack and becoming friendly again. And this will be mostly it for the new 1.7.1a version. Thank you, once again, for your patience and interest in the project!

Une petite mise à jour concernant la prochaine version. Mon travail sur elle touche à sa fin. Hier, j'ai terminé l'ajout de deux formes de vendeurs dans les cartes aléatoires : les vendeurs indépendants et aussi le magasin franchisé de Capital appelé "All Caps". Vous pouvez consulter leurs emplacements ici : Fr.wikipedia2197.org. Ce sera utile pour obtenir de la nourriture et des munitions sur la route sans être absolument obligé.e de chasser ou de pêcher. Et aussi pour éliminer les objets inutiles du jeu, comme les inventaires de ces vendeurs se remettent à zéro à chaque visite.

Je m'occupe maintenant d'implémenter de nouveaux
triggers pour faire fuir les villageois qui ont été tués

Thanks Rickers! You can list your bugs here if you prefer on in a private message, I will add them to the list myself, no worries. I started a wiki for the game some months ago (wikipedia2197.org), but as you will soon notice it is still barebone, especially in english (french is getting great, though). Hopefully, it will get useful and complete for new players in a few months.

Tell me, how this can be a scam if it is free for everyone to play? Not free as in a free-to-play-monetized game, but just free. Who am I scamming? And have you even played it to begin with?

Okay neat, I took a note about adding that 2 CHA requirement for armors. Not perfect as it will show differently than the ST requirement, but I'll try to figure something out that works well.

You also make me realize I need to search and remove all possible effects that might reduce charisma, like the permanent drug (probably the sort of FEV), addictions and other types of effects. Quite sure we can go without them and still have a good realist experience.

Dog armor: Unfortunately, what I meant was that dog wearing armor would probably result in having them change their appearance for a human lol :P If there would be a way to keep it, it would in a way be a nice thing yes, as it is always possible, theorically, to "modify" an armor to fit a dog yess...

As for hunger, I think players will appreciate that I already programmed a small config file to disable it completely, or to tweek its intensity value... Some more options might appear there later on, giving me the opportunity to go strongly with some survival mechanics without fear of having the game being unplayable to casual gamers. Casual gamers are a big concern for me because I used to and plan on having this game displayed in exhibition centers and other art dedicated spaces... I don't want them to quickly die and move on without having experienced any interesting narrative part.

Interacting with settlements: I took a note to create a new feature involving vendors in settlements. I would love them to automatically replenish their inventory of food, water and money on each visit, based on the days passed sinced the last visit. This would be nice to be able to count on vendors for food for the entire duration of the game, not just the beginning, I mean until you have bought everything.

Combat tactics: Pretty great tactic for fighting. I guess it should work good on harder difficulty too, as the diamond spear is one of the best melee weapon in the list. I also increased the melee damage on my last working version, to account for the extra risk of closing the gap. Hope you'll like it!
