Russia says the interim Ukrainian government is full of neo-Nazis, the interim Ukrainian government says Russia is trying to undermine Ukraine's sovereignty. Depending on who you believe, either Russia is attempting to keep Ukraine in its sphere of influence (i.e. outside the EU) or Russia is trying to protect its citizens. Both sides are dubious, but it is acknowledged that Russia pretty much straight-up annexed Crimea, backed up by their military.
In the east, pro-Russian protesters (who may or may not have been armed by Russia, it's less clear than in Crimea) took over police stations, civil offices and other government facilities. The interim Ukrainian government sent the military in to get them out and return them to government control. Now depending on your perspective it's either a young government trying to avoid being pulled apart by foreign interference, fascists trying to establish control over the country by force or people who disagree with the change in government (and resulting focus on EU ties instead of Russia) protesting by force.
The situation is not a civil war, it's a mess. Nobody knows what's going on, partly because nobody tells a clear perspective on it. Russian news sources focus on the right-wing elements and supposed chaos in the streets, whereas american sources just say Russia's trying to rebuild the USSR. Neither of which is very informative.
