Weird question but does this edit any of the base game files? Could I say, create a "Fake" CoC folder and extract the files to there and use the files added as a regular mod (e.g gamedata)?

By default, it turns all the HUD off.
Check the "optional_hud_and_npc" folder that came with the download, then install one of the HUD options (Style AA, Small lite or full (light).
