Would you be so kind as to describe what you are asking people to click on...

MISERY requires being installed by an Admin user and the installer requires it be run "as admin".

Are you running the installer as an Admin user running it as Admin? Is notepad your default plain text program?

What would pop up at the end is the note about not using quick saves and how to edit the file for Quick HARD Saves. Have you tried running MISERY anyway? Notepad should be the default app for opening the note. I can't think of anything that would change that default on a new laptop. The installation instructions are here: Dropbox.com Doublecheck you unpacked the MISERY download and are not trying to install from the archive; also, that you used 7zip to unpack it.

What are your system specs, alife.ltx switch_distance setting (default is 300m) and are you using any add-ons? What do the last ten lines of your crash log say?

The original game (a fresh installation) needs to be installed first. Here are the instructions: Dropbox.com

Get the blue module from Scientists or later in game progression.

None. Using the right artifact module will sheild you from the artifacts radiation. You need tp prevent radiation exposure and use various items to remove radiation (smoking, drinking, medications) There is nothing which will give you a negative radiation effect.

I mean that SSD drives, of any kind, should not be defragmented. It is not needed, and can eventually degrade performance. To be honest, I have used SSD's in at least 20 systems and never seen a performance degradation. Audio and photo/video storage are perfect uses for an external or traditional drive.

Yes, you can backup the saves. Your performance will not suffer at all. As long as you don't fill it past 80% full, it will work perfectly. Just make sure that Windows has defragmentation on that drive disabled.

Drives don't work very well beyond 80% capacity. The NVMe drive will most benefit boot times, and games. What size is the NVMe? I've never known anyone to play off an external drive, that can't help any, especially if it is old and/or full. If you can uninstall things which do not benefit from the NVMe and make room for 12Gb of MISERY/COP stuff, I would add a cheap SSD(internal) to play my current game off of. A 32GB drive would hold any single game and save siles and cost about $15. I'm betting things could be rearranged or uninstalled.

Yes, navigate though the anomaly field on your own from the road side. Red ecologist suit is very handy there.

All my guides are here: Moddb.com

However, there is not a computer built which can play MISERY 2.2.1 at high resolution, maxed out at 90 FPS, and run stable.

Running at higher switch_distances does reduce stutter/lag, but it makes too much life be active at once and causes both instability/crashes and life to intermix too much leading to much more frequent deaths of story characters. My rig specs are in my profile, but I still do not play higher than the default 300m at 55 FOV. So, you can choose to play with increased crashes and more buggy life interactions, or compromise on some video features and play the game more normally. The xray engine simply won't give you everything and MISERY levels of AI and population at the same time. At 900m switch_distance, there is 36X more area full of active life than in the original game. MISERY has at least 3-4x as much life on the maps per square meter, and the engine simply can't process all that.
If you PM me your system specs, I can suggest which compromises will get you closest to your desired result on your hardware and you can tweak from there.

Players really need to read the documentation for add-ons before using them. I pretty sure it categorically states that this is currently the case as it is a BETA of TAZ.

When does a movie or game trailer not look good? Painfully long trailer... couldn't watch it all. I saw no indication of game play... I guess we will see in a year or two...

I agree, but we lack the programmers to implement more at this time. I like a good sandbox, if it is challenging enough. The story being stripped away would refresh things a bit, or being replaced.

Heat seeking knives, teflon coated to slide in/out easier ... maybe knives that don't drip or require wiping off...

I don't use them in-game, so I can't visualize the iron sights on them either...

I can't even think of what you would do to 'upgrade' a knife or axe... Now, if I hade the coders to do it, PDA's could be mapless until upgraded. Buy, earn, or loot a PDA containing a map, bring it to a technician to get it uploaded onto your PDA. Upgrades from green to black & white to full color screens, memory upgrades, etc. That I could see.

All you need to do is turn off the helmet hud in the configuration menu; it is the top right selection in the 'game' tab. You will never see condensation, damage like cracks, or the mask restricting your vision. I generally do this. I see both the desirability for immersion, and how annoying it can be.

"In the Zone it's every man for himself. Take care."

Personally, I don't use 'my friends' as cannon fodder or bait to draw fire and do all my dirty work. I take care of myself. Everyone's tactics are different and you should play the game how you like. As the quote indicates, you can not expect others to look out for anyone except themselves in the Zone. So, you have discovered a weakness in your tactic, and may need to adjust accordingly or live with the weakness.

I've played over 7000 hours, and it doesn't do that at all. It is meant for players who want more challenge, not those who don't want it to get harder later on. Most players complain that after the 'poor' phase very early on it gets too easy. I played more than 2000 hours of 2.0.x and 2.1.x and the increase in obstacles was a welcome change from other mods.

Try the default 300m alife. Install AN4 (Absolute Nature 4.04) using the lowest grass height and draw distances. Turn off AA and shadows, reduce shadow quality. Original alife was 150. Anything between that and 300 will play fine. Everyone thinks because they can play some other title on their rig at high/ultra setting thay can do the same on the xray engine, and it simply isn't the case.

After reaching certain milestones, spawns increase some. I always noticed it shortly after clearing the sawmill. This is deliberate.
Whether your system is capable of playing MISERY at your chosen settings is the cause of crashes. Jupiter is a busier map than Zaton. On average, to maintain the same FPS, your alife.ltx switch_distance needs to be 50m less than what is required in Zaton.
If you post your current systems spoecs, I can suggest starting configuration settings. MISERY 2.2.1 is more demanding than prior releases. More life, more flora and fauna.
See my tips page for instructions on quickly optimizing your individual rig for MISERY: Moddb.com
