I'm Nick, aka jacksonj04, and I used to be a volunteer staff member here at ModDB. I was active on ModDB way back at the beginning, and did (at one point) actually mod. Outside gaming I have a degree in Computing and Cybernetics from the University of Lincoln, which is just as cool as it sounds.

Try again. GDDR5 is graphics memory (not general purpose RAM), and the GTX 295 only has GDDR3.

Not necessarily - it depends what he's including in the price. If that includes a 30" colour-calibrated monitor, for example, then a big portion of the cost (whilst the price for that component will drop over time) probably won't go out of date for a good few years.

Landing was a swine though - for 'proper' landing areas there should probably be some form of beacon-guided landing so you just have to get yourself into range. Of course the hard-core amongst us would just disable it, but the option would be nice.

Mac for the huge majority of things I do, except Windows for gaming and some specialist lighting design tools.

Umm... perhaps they stick with it because it still looks acceptable (if not 'stunning'), it's proven technology, it's well supported, it's easily extensible, it runs on a wide range of hardware and it's easier to build on their current engine and make a good game than to waste effort building a new one?

How do you think we got to TF2, CS:S and DoD:S? Because there was TF, CD and DoD to begin with.

I think if there is an earth its presence will be more of a bonus than an actual objective. It may be out there 'somewhere', but finding it isn't the purpose.

I think they're using SteamWorks, which lets NS2 play really nicely with Steam distribution, player stats, Steam Cloud, achievements and VAC.

jacksonj04 - - 631 comments @ Natural Selection 2

There seems to be some confusion regarding why NS2 is classed as an indie game, so here's the reason:

An independent game is one which is designed and built without the financial backing of a publisher. NS2 is the sole work of Unknown Worlds and has no associated publisher with a financial interest in the project and is therefore - despite having the intention of being sold and using a publisher to distribute it - an independent game.

If someone like Valve or EA suddenly decided to throw $1,000,000 at UW (and they accepted) to make NS2 then it would become a commercial title.

jacksonj04 - - 631 comments @ Would you mod console games if the platform was open like the PC?

If it's a purely console game then no - there's no point because it would need the dev tools on a PC anyway.

If it's a game for both platforms and maps/mods/content can be shared between the two (UT3) then go for it.

It depends. RTS I'll usually read the manual, because that way you tend to get to know all the useful keyboard shortcuts for things like waypoints, group control and so on.

FPS, never to my memory.

jacksonj04 - - 631 comments @ I don't give second chances

It depends if the release is touted as a 'beta' or as a '1.0'. If it's a beta, the mod team accepts it's a beta, and it's advertised as such then as xMurphyx said it's only a sneak-preview. Bad gameplay may change, and although I may not try it every release I'll certainly revisit it. On the other hand a '1.0' release with a mod team going "it's finished!" gets less sympathy if it's bad. They should have playtested more.

Of course there's a lot of personal opinion as well and I'm not going to go decrying a mod because I personally dislike it, but some mods refuse to listen to enormous amounts of feedback and keep making the mod worse instead of better - they don't get a second chance unless the leadership changes.

jacksonj04 - - 631 comments @ Mods + Steamworks : The story so far...

I think one of the best points about SteamWorks is the instant feedback it can provide to teams on player numbers, which maps are popular, how people behave and so on enabling them to better focus the mod to who is playing it and how they actually play. Not to mention the huge benefits of automated (and thus hopefully more regular) updates.
