Although the release may still be far away we'll be releasing 'modpacks' sooner than that. We hope to release the first one (The Egyptians) in a few months. Releasing additional ones later. How long this will take (releasing all of the civilisations, and doing the balancing) is something we cannot say at the moment.

The lagging is mainly caused by two factors: 1) the pathfinding isn't optimal yet and 2) the game doesn't support multithreading yet. These are two problems which will be solved by the time the game gets released.
