There will be interaction between different kinds of boxed and different kinds of floor tiles.
Example: Hot floor burns wood box.
Sometimes you want it to, sometimes you don't.

We'll have to see if we can afford the time for that.

Of course - the left image is our diffuse map, a specular map isn't needed for characters though.

Normal maps are used in most of todays games - you just don't notice the effect this much because they're usually used on the surfaces of 3D objects.
It's then only making a slight difference.

Unity is simply the most amazing mix of compitibilty, programming AND designing simplicity and wonderful results - for free.
What the Unity team gave to the game world, especially the indie game world, is hardly comparable with anything else.
