If the ice is thin, it will break. If the ice is thick enough, it won't break. Simple as that =)

In real life people drive tractors on frozen lakes in Finland.

You mean, here in IndieDB, or at game official home-page? Either way, I guess it must have been a temporary problem since no-one else has been complaining about this. Hope it already worked for you!

this has been causing a lot of misunderstandings - so maybe it would be safest to say that the graphics update is just going to imlement bigger game window (freely scalable). Current tileset is something like 20*18 pixels per tile, but that is going to be bigger as well. So, all the tiles have to be redrawn in bigger size. Otherwise, after the update, the game will look pretty much it is now.

Work in progress. And it takes as long as it takes - you can never tell. If we are lucky, we get it done before the end of this year.

Oh, and by the way. I guess anybody who likes UrW, would also enjoy this music&video. Especially if one is from Czech Republic.

At the moment the dev nutrition bar is month-based. It resets in the beginning of every month, and then slowly goes up as the donations pour in - so towards the end of the month we see if total sum of donations was enough to pay the living costs for that month.

Major future development goals are listed here:
Unrealworld.fi

Any unlisted minor feature might pop up and make it to the to-do list, so you'll never know =) Only thing I can say for now is that at the moment we are not working with bigger houses. The focus for coming versions will be on improving NPC interactions and artificial intelligence.

Maybe not in the near future, as there are so many other major features on to-do list. And yup, Nordic countries are the superpowers of metal =)

We use mostly C and C++, for my side projects I use Pascal, and for EnormousElk website I've been slowly learning some PHP. (but in many ways I still tend to think of programming in terms of Commodore 64 assembler, as that was kind of a ultimate way of coding =) )

in 1999 URW was on version 2.30, with already 7 years of constant development time behind it. This game is bit like a way of life for Sami =)

I learned to program when I was something like 12 years old. That was the times of Commodore 64 =) And it was pretty much same for Sami, we never studied coding at any school. It has just been a hobby, indie art and learning by doing =)

I did college and the university, and later on took a course to become a professional massage therapist. Yup, I work full time, drawing a lot from the old ways of Finnish folk-medicine.

my personal history is pretty much described in my blog, starting at Enormouselk.com

URW donations are Sami's main income.

Oh, and I have an ADSL connection, speedtest just showed 3.88 Mbps download speed, which is OK for me. Sami uses a mobile connection, which is somewhat slower but good enough for a indie programmer =)

Yes we live in the Finnish countryside. I'd say live here is pretty enjoyable =) I guess there is work for programmers, don't know for sure because we tend to just do things of our own, instead being employed in a company.

I haven't heard of muslim problems in Finland, nope. The average middle aged male Finnish men might be more of a problem, especially when drunk =)

I admit that I haven't thoroughly checked all the mods our community provides. But I have a feeling that out there we have some decent mods replacing the real-life photos with textures and / or cartoon-style pictures.

Ah, the project was started already before Windows became popular =) At those times using hotkeys was the standard for all the games. Since then the focus of the development has been in game content. But let's see what the future brings, as I'm pretty sure Sami will keep the development going for years to come.

Hi, MooseDrewl and others encountering similar problems: Are you using a laptop? Possibly with Windows 7? As this weird behavior might be related to your hardware settings. You could try these: If your keyboard has a "func lock" key, make sure that fn lock is off. Check your Windows settings, if there is something like "mobility settings", it might let you adjust how fn keys work. Finally, some laptops have a bios setting for fn key behavior. Or, if you have an external usb keyboard, try if that works. (anyhow, a way to change the keys settings would be a nice feature, but at the moment we are so busy with other stuff, that implementing this isn't likely in the near future)

Well, of course some years have been rather quiet. And most of the time it has been just an one-man project of Sami. So, at times the development has been rather slow. Also, one could ask that how did it take this long to develop Windows - it is almost the same, Windows has been under development for that many years, seeing new versions one after one. This is not just a game-project, it is more like a part of our lifestyle =) Ah, and what did we have back in the 1992? Those were the times we were using modems connected to ordinary phone-landline. And some people were running "meeting places", bit like micro-servers featuring discussion board, file downloads, primitive on-line games etc. Of course, if they had only one phone-line in the household, the server could take only one user online at a time =) The UnReal World was published on one of those micro-servers. And guess what; people also saved their games on floppy discs and sent them over to friends via ordinary snail-mail =) Oh my, life in the beginning of the 1990's was bit more slow-paced than today...

I admit that when we entered IDB, I was bit confused with the release date; I was wondering if I should use the date of the latest version release, or the very first public release (which is 1992). So, I just typed in 1.1.1994 as a date for v 2.00, which pretty much is the version on which URW is still based on. So, dear players, let's just Keep on Rockin' in the UnReal World!
