try different pricing options.. maybe the $8 is throwing people off.. but i personally don't see why people wont spend more than 5 bucks on an indie game.. but people seem to be used to the whole $1 dollar craze.

see if maybe if u could be included in an indie bundle..? this may not be the best idea as far as i am concerned but.. i say try to increase your sales in other ways first.. but..?

try additional game distribution services in addition to desura.. since there is a few other options besides desura.. & maybe you would have more luck elsewhere?

send an email to Indiegames.com and other various sites for promotion.. they may promote it.. they may not.. try indiegamemag.com along with other sites. (if u havent already)

try to see if you can do an interview for an indie game site.. ?

earvesicle - - 47 comments @ Creating a game: General tips and advice

I just wanted to talk in reference about one comment in the post:

"You have to treat potential players like a kid that you need to give a hand during a trip in your game’s world."

Yes I agree it's a very important thing to yes give a hand to the player and guide them along.. but it can easily be something that is overly done in games or can be obsessed about to the point of causing yourself more problems when you are making a game when you are always thinking or worrying about how to help lead the player along or helping them get used to controls/game mechanics or etc... when actually sometimes it is better to not help the player like a kid..

(And I know Martin (who i quoted) didn't mean it in this way.. that you should hold hands with the player as if they were a kid through out your game.. (and I don't know why I am thinking about this so much..) since he just meant it in a general sense..)

It is a very delicate balance of helping the player along and not helping the player.. that's all I am trying to say..

Just as an example of what at least in my opinion is a pretty good example of decent balance of helping and not helping.. is... The Legend Of Zelda (the original for NES) had a pretty fun balance of helping and not helping the player.. (and yeah. it is sometimes painful [i find it funny] to watch people play for the first time and run past where you get the sword..and watch as they run around hopelessly..[i find it hard to not say where to go but it actually makes the game more rewarding if you don't tell them where to get the sword since it leads to exploration and learning how the game world works on their own.. which i feel is a rewarding experience and makes the game strangely more immersive..) But the game also gives you just enough of a hint on how to do something (usually) so that you learn about the gameworld and your interactions with it.. and you feel like you are smart by figuring out the vague help hints.."dodongo dislikes smoke"..

haha.. dont worry about the whole **** thing.. wonder why it came up in a search! haha.... progress has pretty much grinded to a halt since i don't program c# and the programmer quit since he got a job in the game design field.. so i have been working on my own project in udk.. since kismet is something i can handle better than c#.

Curious if you are still working on Roadkill Warriors since i just started work on trying to make something similar.. basically a linear singleplayer post-apoc fps/driving/surviving game.. like mad max etc... and was planning on doing kinda similar setting desert/rat rods etc.. and happened to find Roadkill Warriors by chance today in my reference searching etc.. I see you have been offline since may.. so let me know if you are not continuing the project.. and if so could you tell me why? would you maybe be willing to share assets left over from the project..?

I am thinking you should head more in the sims language style of voices and less of this reversed sounding stuff.. it sounds creepy... which is appropriate for bad guys but its too obviously reversed sounding.. even if its possibly nonsense words originally and then put in reverse the effect itself of a reversed sound is kinda awkward here.. its not terrible and i guess will work out fine but i could see something more like sim'ish working out better,, just my two cents i might be completely off here.. but as a sound designer myself that is my opinion.. the voices themselves are great but the reversed effect is taking away from that

Really enjoyed reading this.. rarely do people ever explain the process of paper prototyping especially in the sense of combat. Sorry I was missing in action for a week been really sick check your email for updated sfx.

i think i like it with hair.. he seems more "complete" with hair than without hair as far as over all design of the character and for those reasons i think hair works better than bald. by the way the characters bum is hilarious...

Yeah i had been following s&sw from the beginning too and thought i wouldn't get to play it either.. but my girlfriend bought an ipad so i got a chance to play it and really enjoyed it. I really wish they would release it on other platforms as well.. seems kinda a dumb move since the whole "touch: the screen".. could work just as well with a controller in my opinion for s&sw.

Again really looking forward to seeing progress of DungeonQuest! Maybe this can help for sfx.. Bfxr.net

So glad to see that you are working on this again! hey if you need some inspiration with pixel art check out SUPERBROTHERS art! and if you have an ipad/ipod you should play sword & sworcery.. this type of simple pixel art can work and be quite beautiful too.. i personally am tempted to copy superbrothers style of pixel art but i would feel like a failure.. good luck!

enjoy the game a good deal! And it could really be a great little game.

i just updated last night.. i downloaded last in december? maybe it was february..

did you replace some of the weapon art to less detailed art? or am i crazy? because i want to say i liked some of the old art better for some weapons..?

I play usually as an archer but in the new update i am really running low on arrows.. to the point where i am bashing enemies with my bow for a long time before finding any melee weapon! (i liked the duplicating bug in the version i had before..hehe) plus i can't find enough stuff that I am willing to transform into arrows either.. maybe it should be transforming items to arrows should give you more like 10 arrows instead of 5..

Or maybe can you make enemies drop arrows and other stuff? how about a merchant where i can sell/buy stuff in one of the many dead ends..? Treasure would be nice too.. like money.. and such.. ?

haha..i am sure you have tons to add and that you are working on it.. just would love to see some of this in the next update which i hope comes soon

really? i can notice the difference. they are pretty subtle changes i guess though.. they were good as they were but even the less noticeable tweaks in the video do make a pretty big difference as far as making things a bit smoother and animated.. as in lively.. at least to me..

Ahh i knew you were the same person as who was making Bottom.. just by the art.. heh.. looks great! been thinking of messing around with Construct since i am attempting to teach myself c# but i have very little previous programming experience and its taking a lot of effort.. and time.. that i don't really have with school and a job and such.. and i can never get programmers to commit for very long. PM me about Construct if you have the time and your thoughts about it perhaps..
