I just tested it, I plundered two villages and my game didn't crash. Perhaps you do not have the latest version of Warband and because of this you have crashes.

Yes, such armor was found in the north, depending on which tribes, I think that the wooden armor then disappeared after the colonization of Europeans, since they will not protect against anything.
