Doom and Destiny

Game review

Great sense of humor. Nice options for customizing your characters and how you approach combat. Lots of different weapons and items to collect. Graphics are limited by the engine used, but are still pretty good. Great story. My only complaint is that sometimes you can get a little lost, meaning that you're not quite sure where to go. But after a bit of wandering around, you'll eventually figure out where you're supposed to be. All in all, a great game deserving of your money, especially considering how cheap it it.

Space Pirates and Zombies (SPAZ)

Game review

Really fun game with a lot of customization. Enjoyable combat, decent exploration, and a sense of humor. My only complaint is that sometimes it can get really hard and put you between a rock and a hard place, forcing you into a bit of grinding to improve your ships. Other than that, it's a good time.

Cave Story+

Game review

One of the best known indie games ever made, and one of the best, if not THE best, metroidvania game of all time. I love metroidvania games and this is how you do one right. Seriously, I have a hard time thinking of games of this type that I enjoy more. My only complaint is that some of the save points are not ideally located, forcing you to re-do certain parts over and over if you keep dying. But even that is a minor complaint. If you don't own this game already, buy it. It's worth it.

Dear Esther

Game review

Not really a game. More of an interactive story, and I use the term "interactive" very loosely.

You walk around.

That's it. It feels more like a tech demo than a finished product.

Every once in a while some narrator chimes in to advance the story, but the experience amounts to someone telling a very short story very, very, very, slowly. It's like watching water boil in a pot......over a candle flame. Sure, it might get there eventually but you're going to be waiting a while and there's not much to do in the meantime.

On the upside and the only reason why I'm giving this game a 3/10 instead of a 1/10, the graphics are spectacular. Honestly, I didn't know that the Source Engine was capable of that and the developers obviously put a lot of time and effort into them.

I got this game as part of an indie bundle, but I can't recommend anyone spend money on this unless you really want to support the developers. And if that's the case, save yourself the download time and just mail them a check.

A Valley Without Wind

Game review

I want to like this game. I really do. But this is one of those games that I start playing, spend about an hour or two with, and then put down never to play again. There seems to be some sort of story there, but I'll be damned if I understand what it is. And the gameplay? I'm running around killing monsters and collecting....something....and generally just don't have the faintest idea of what the hell I'm supposed to be doing. The developers seem to have made a really good game but unfortunately, they didn't spend any time explaining the game to the player or giving him any reason to play. And "get the player interested" is rule number one in game design. At least the sequel looks to be more thought out in that department.

Got this in a bundle deal. Graphics are nice, but it's just not my kind of game. I'm sure some people would love it, just not me.

Fun game with good graphics but it can get a little old after a while. Still, worth it if the price is right.

Machinarium

Game review

Beautiful art and a fascinating game world are dragged down by some really non-nonsensical solutions to the puzzles. Eventually, you just start throwing logic out of the window and resort to solving problems by clicking on everything. I find that type of game design frustrating and it hurt my appreciation for everything that this game does right. Still, 7/10 is by no means bad.

Braid

Game review

I don't give out very many 10/10 scores but this is one of the most well thought out, and most beautiful puzzle games that I have ever played. The challenges ramp up in difficulty at a nice steady pace, some of which become mind boggling. In fact, there was one in particular that, if I had not cheated and watched a video on youtube, I never would have beat the game. But along with that challenge comes the immense satisfaction when you finally figure out how to complete the puzzle. And the beautiful art style and music keep you entertained even when the puzzle makes you want to pull your hair out. Add in a somewhat cryptic story and some subtle (and not so subtle) references to pop culture, and you have a recipe for a great game. If for some reason you haven't already played Braid, buy it.
