beckett007 - - 22 comments @ FINAL UPDATE - The Shelter released as Machinima Film!

It was only intended to be a 15 minute experience, this is all there is / was supposed to be.

The idea was that the mod was supposed to be an interactive short film (or twilight zone episode) the player would experience in first person. I deliberately didn't explain everything so that the player / viewer would make their own decision rearding the events happening in the shelter and what lies beyond the door. I was considering expanding it with additional 15 minute episodes...perhaps even exploring what is past the door. However, as stated above, I no longer have time to develop the mod, but you never know. If interest developes I may return to the mod if I ever have time! So lets say its on ice for now, going in to a longish hypersleep.

Thanks so much for the support and please pass the video link around, its a great proof of concept video!

Its not just you... the compression on moddb in general is questionable. The original sounds much better.

wow, that is SUPER odd. The EpiQuake pk3 should definitely be overwriting that sound. I'll look into this, but not sure how much help I'll be able to provide!

PakScape will...
Fileplanet.com

Pak Explorer opens the .pk3 files. Sorry for the confusion. Be sure to back up the quake originals before editing them.

NICE WORK! I actually just released a quake sound mod which features 212 new sounds and an all new cinematic score. It works like a champ in the DarkPlaces engine and would go really well as a "companion mod" to Epsilon.

Nice writeup and video, thanks. I actually just released an updated sound pak for Quake which goes really well with these graphical upgrades.

I just did the same... and yeah, these new sounds and music tracks do work quite well Armagon. So for those of you wondering.. yup, EpiQuake works just fine in the expansions. Thanks for confirming Johnny!

Thanks! I haven't touched the mission packs as of yet. I'm toying with the idea of going the EpiQuake route with Quake 2 at some point and / or doing a cinematic music pak for Quake with features an even more epic / orchestral / electronic style of score.

Thanks for the kind words! Definitely wanted to retain the original sound vibe Quake had going on while making it sound fresh and new! Not bad for two weeks worth of work ;).

THe shelter is unfortunately.... dead. For now anyway. I recently have completed a new audio mod for Quake 1 called EpiQuake which is going to release next week. Check it out here:

Thanks so much for all of the kind remarks and tracking! I'll try to keep updating when I can but as the mod is super short.... i cant show too much or I'll give evrything away. More soonish.

Lol...its an audio based mod that takes place in a basement shelter. What were you guys expecting? The lone level in the mod is basic and NOT the main focus, the audio is.

Lol, the track titles are just that... track titles. Don't take them too seriously. Not ALL action pieces have to have a buildup... just listen to any number of film scores that get right to the point during an action scene. In fact, my entire score for Rebirth is actually a homage to the late Jerry Goldsmith... MANY of his action cues just start without any sort of warning. On another note, a full 30 minute score has been put together and a soundtrack will be released when Trance feels the time is right.

There's some EPIC material in my score...

Just wait until you hear "Nerevarine Invocation" complete with a female gaelic vocalist.

Thanks! Really happy with how this... and the other cues.. have turned out so far. I'm hoping to do a full 20 to 40 minutes of music for the mod and will most likely release a soundtrack download.

Just my opinion of course. But that track oozes of old school chiptune goodness... and NOT halo. Why is it that everyone wanting to get into music for mods / games thinks techno / electronic music is the only genre there is? Great work on the track though mate, just don't think it fits the halo universe at all.

These aren't supposed to be scary. I went for a campy / cheesy vibe when composing them :). If you want scary, stick to my modern score I'm doing for the mod... the other music examples should give you an idea what I'm going for there.

I didn't use anything too spectacular for these old school cues.... to keep things as authentic to the Goblin / George Romero sound of the 70s I utulized a CS-80 synthesizer (the same synth used in the Dawn score and made famous by Vangelis in Bladerunner) as well as a small rhythm section, a bass guitar, and fender electric guitar. For the more modern cues that have been posted, these are the sample libraries I've been utilizing: Project SAM Brass, Project SAM Symphobia, Stormdrum 2, and Evolve.

Those of you that are concerned about this old school sound shouldn't be. It's optional for one... and secondly it's totally a dead ringer for the music heard in the Romero dead films.
