I have been periodically and comprehensively modding Homeworld 2 since 2004. My primary project is Tactical Fleet Simulator (TFS), the third iteration of which was completed in 2011. Currently I am working on updating TFS and developing a successor mod for the Homeworld Remastered Collection.

There is a game mode called "TFS v2.9 Enhanced" that has more starting RU options than the standard deathmatch game mode.

Navigate to your "x:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Homeworld\Homeworld2Classic\Bin\Profiles\Profile1" directory and open the file called "PlayerCFG.lua" in notepad. Change the values for screenResolutionW and screenResolutionH to your monitors native resolution. This should resolve any scaling issues you are experiencing due to using an incorrect display resolution.

The workshop version of the mod has been updated.

The issue was with a single player unit (the Hiigaran Escort Carrier) calling the old subsystem file. I have fixed the issue and updated TFS on the Steam workshop.

Thanks. It is referencing an old subsystem that was removed at some point; try restarting the campaign from scratch without using any old save files as those wont work because the past few versions of the mod changed the names of various files and purged redundant ones.

What error is your log file reporting after the game crashes?

I plan on eventually recreating this mod for Homeworld Remastered after Gearbox releases their major patch that "fixes" squadrons and formations, but with a more limited scope: I might not be able to port over the Strategic Bombers because Gearbox is making it really difficult for us modders to update/edit kitbashes of stock ship HODs.

But you can expect some variation of this mod for Remastered at some point in the future.

I don't have an ETA. Converting the mod over is no trivial amount of work, so expect it to be a while before a full release.

Yes, TFS will run using Homeworld Classic on Steam. You can install the mod from Steam workshop if you are using the Gearbox/Steam version of the game.

You would see the TFS menu screen and a big "Tactical Fleet Simulator" logo at the top of it.

It sounds like you didn't create a shortcut to run the mod. Make sure you are running Homeworld 2 with the following command line:

-mod TFSv2.9.big,;TFS_UIMod.big

That's correct. On my system at least, if I have shadows enabled with the shader mod, ships appear transparent in certain areas.

This is a common complaint with the campaign. For some people it works without issue, for others the triggers don't activate at some point (usually after the player is tasked with destroying the Vaygr probes) and thus they cannot progress to the fourth level.

The modified campaign level scripts are from a really old version of the mod, so the campaign is not guaranteed to run flawlessly with the current version of the mod. I will look into the issue with mission 3 for the upcoming release, but modifying the campaign is a very low priority for v2.9.

You can expect some sort of release, either an open beta or full release, before Homeworld 2 Remastered launches in February. ;)

It sounds like you are having issues with your frame rate being too high. Try enabling Vsync to eliminate the lag.

We don't exactly know all the formats that are being changed in the remastered version yet, and so I can't know for sure how difficult it will be to port TFS into the Remastered version of the game.

That being said, after the release of v2.9 I intend to develop the next major version of TFS for the Remastered version of the game if possible.

It might be a driver issue or you might be playing with high/very high unit caps. The game engine is old and unoptimized, so it will lag regardless of your CPU and GPU speed when there are lots of units present.

There is no scheduled release date for the next version of the mod, and v2.9 has not yet been officially announced. But you can expect an update to be released by 2015.

I am not entirely sure. I have had these shaders on my hard drive for a few years, they were used in a really old version of TFS v2.5 or v2.6... so I am going to assume they are the older shaders from CNLPepper.

What are/were the major changes between Stargazer's and the original shaders from CNLPepper?

Thanks for the feedback - I will amend the instructions for the M4persist folder fix.

There is already a setting in some game modes that allows you to increase and decrease the weapon damage ratio. If I recall correctly, the game mode is called "TFS v2.8RD" or "Cinematic Mode" and allows you to set the damage ratio at 25, 50 or 75% of the default damage value.

Thanks for posting your findings.

When I last tested the campaign a few years back, I was able to defend the shipyard in v2.8.1 by having a DDE-73 (escort destroyer) and a few DDK / DDI / CCK cruisers positioned where the Shipyard Nabaal jumps in.

Hey Capt! It's been a while!

In Tunngle, in the lobby search bar type in "Homeworld". A list of Homeworld-related servers should pop up. The one named "Homeworld 2 - Tactical Fleet Simulator 3G" is the appropriate one for TFS.

A small number of us still play through Tunngle, which has a dedicated lobby for TFS.

You can modify the resolution using notepad in the PlayerCFG.lua file for your profile. This file is located in the following directory:

...Sierra/Homeworld2/bin/profiles/profile1 (2,3...etc)

Battlecry - - 99 comments @ Vaygr FC-12B Preview for v2.9

In previous versions of TFS, the FC-12B would not fire its cluster missiles at non-strikecraft targets to prevent them from wasting their missile since it had a long reload time. This will be changed in TFS v2.9 so that the cluster missile has a slightly higher rate of fire and an ability to target larger ships.

"Gearbox" recently acquired the rights to the Homeworld franchise and are planning a sequel as well as a refresh of the original games. Is that what you are referring to?

Battlecry - - 99 comments @ Modernized FF-25C Interceptor (v2.9)

Why would the interceptor require a lifting body with small wings in the first place...? Unless it was also intended for atmospheric flight... but I think a more plausible explanation is that the developers thought it would give the ship more character (realistic looking space fighters would look nothing like the Hiigaran Interceptor in the first place).

So the addition of retractable fins is keeping in the tradition of Homeworld ship design philosophy based on favoring aesthetics over practicality.

Initially I was going to add two missile launchers to each fin, which would retract when in combat, but decided against that for the sake of simplicity.

I was never affiliated with PDS. There was a short-lived merger between TFS and PDS back in 2006, but nothing came of it.

PDS had a very different style of gameplay and was not the most well-balanced mod in its time.

The Destroyer has four fusion missile launchers and two mass driver turrets. The fusion missiles deliver the most of the damage output, which the FHK lacks (the mines obviously can't compare to the damage and effectiveness of fusion missiles).

Thanks for the screenshots. I have already modified the main menu screen and badge window and also plan to rescale the deathmatch screen.

REARM had a great idea by stretching the game options window along the vertical axis... much more room for displaying the mode-specific options. I will definitely look into making similar changes for v2.9.
