@[DarynS](members:daryns:959492) and I have been friends for nearly 30 years, he and I working on various projects together, for many of those years. @[DarynS](members:daryns:959492) has the ability to pick up very quickly on technical matters, learning very rapidly, thereafter able to apply what he has learned with great effectiveness. Whereas I, apparently, have some small knack for making Doom maps. Our two talents compliment each other's perfectly, all of our projects, without exception, emerging remarkably well. Especially our Doom maps. I have dabbled in making maps for Doom since the late 90s, getting my start with DoomEd, then later graduating to DoomBuilder2, when I decided to get back into map-making again. Now, I use Ultimate DoomBuilder, enjoying it very much, and especially its developers' apparent desire to make the full power of GZDoom accessible to as many people as they can.

Yeah, we can't include the commercial wad file. Folks have to get that, themselves, by purchasing Doom2. For us to include Doom2 in our releases would be a copyright violation and would get us into trouble!

Hehe, there is a big sign you have to clip through to get to map09. It says the map is far from complete and there is no exit in it yet. We left the map in, so players who were curious, could go in and have a look at it. But then would need to go back to the last save in map03, to return to normal play.

However, map09 is done now! At least, I have it completed. All that's left now is playtesting and tweaking. It will be available for play in our next update!

That is an error that keeps cropping up with Project Brutality and GZDoom again and again with our maps. We're stumped as to why, as is Project Brutality and GZDoom.

I've played through the maps, all of them, at least a hundred times each, and randomly at the end of some of the maps, I'll get that only killed like, 23% of the monsters, when I know I got all of them. I should know. I placed all of them!

So yeah, we don't know why it's happening or how to fix it. Hopefully some of these days, either the guys developing Project Brutality or GZDoom will stumble upon the problem, and fix it when they do. Until then, we're just kind of stuck with it.

Hahaha! Thank you very much, MacDoom81! It really means a lot to us when people say they enjoyed their experience so much! Just so many things, so many considerations, and just so much THOUGHT went into the maps' design, just so we COULD make a cohesive, and therefor, immersive experience! To us, video games that draw you in AND you have fun playing them WHILE being drawn in, is what good video game design should be all about!

So once again, thank you very much. That you enjoyed playing as much as you did, is just the reward we were looking for for our efforts!

Well, and another issue we had, too, was Project Brutality's random spawn function. In order to try to get players the kinds of weapons, ammo and backpack pickups I wanted, I had to pretty much place an inordinately large number of items around in the maps.

But DarynS figured out how we could customize pickups. After he did, I started fine tuning the maps to be more about what I had originally envisioned for them. Namely, scarcer pickups, making finding ammo a challenge and encouraging players to seek out and use the base's assets.

My vision was to make Dragon Sector a set of maps that not only gave players a heaping dose of Doom fun, but to also encourage exploring, being especially mindful of hints and clues, and often times, thinking outside the box. And as a nice side advantage of that, to also make the maps as replayable as I could; miss something the first few times through, keep trying until one finds it all. It was a formula which worked awesomely well for the Original Doom. I hoped, very much to recreate that experience here. :)

Yeah, I know exactly where you're talking about. But it's like I said - there is a switch in the Master at Arms' office, that opens that door. Then down in that corridor, after you get that first door open, is a maintenance workshop that has another switch in it, which opens the door to the back of the shooting range.

It's a bit convoluted, I admit, but I did it that way in keeping with the original Doom's propensity for puzzles. :)

Wow! Awesome! Thank you! That's high praise, because there are a lot of really good wads out there! So thank you very much, and we're very glad you enjoyed playing!

As for dark areas, heh, just keep your eyes peeled. There are light amplification pickups squirreled around here and there. ;)

We had to do a second upload of this last night. Kind of an emergency thing.

Because yeeeeeah. I made a first-year-modder mistake like a big modding lubie. I left a player start in where I was doing some quick edit work and forgot to take him out again.

But it's all fixed now. So if you got this mod before about 11 CDT last night, you might want to snag a fresh copy of it.

Credit goes to DarynS for finding it!

The only problem I can foresee, is jumping. I placed some pickups in higher areas, to take advantage of Project Brutality's jumping ability. So if your mod doesn't support jumping, then you might miss some pickups and even some secrets.

If it does have jumping, then no problem.

Like DarynS said, we're designing the maps and writing the script for GZDoom, UDMF format. If a mod will work in GZDoom, then it should run our maps without any problem at all.

With one caveat. :)

If you're running Russian Overkill, avoid using any super weapons. Yeah, the maps are chock full of voodoo dolls. And RO's super weapons don't pay attention to walls or map boundaries at all. :)

Yeah, these maps are very resources intensive. One needs to have a pretty impressive machine to run them at full graphics settings.

If you have a slower, older machine, you might try dialing the settings back some. This should help.

But either way, we wanted to make a set of maps that really brought retro-Doom and Project Brutality to life. But in order to enjoy them at their full potential, one just has to have a pretty robust machine.

¡Hola VeJean!

And I was able to get me one - a new laptop.

As the old saying goes? Fall in sh-t and come out smelling like a rose? I found a sweet little Acer at Wally World for less than what I paid for the laptop I destroyed, and which is about as three times as powerful!

Like? Is there someone watching over me upstairs?

Somethin', right?

But yep, a new machine is in hand. All it's going to be now, is getting Ultimate Doom Builder setup properly, and then get everything imported back in. That latter of which will be exceptionally easy, as DarynS and I use Dropbox for storing all of our source files. Sign into it, and you got all of your files back! Woo!

So that said, I'll be back to map-making soon!

Yeah, like a complete goober, I spilled my drink on my laptop. Instant dead laptop. And since it is what I use to make my maps while I'm on the road, yeah, there'll be no more map making until I can get the laptop replaced. And that could be days... or weeks.

Just a quick note to let you all know that things are going to be slowed down for a bit. My laptop seems to be broken, and I won't be able to continue working on the maps until I either get it repaired or replaced.

We fixed a couple of things. Hoy! Plug Doors and now the maps autosave!

Plug Doors used to operate only one at a time. Ennn't! That was quickly becoming a pain in the backside for players, myself included!

Well, we, DarynS and I, figured out why. And frickin FIXED it! So yep, Plug Doors can now be operated while another one is still doing its thing!

Isn't learning stuff cool?

And autosaves. Put a bunch of them around the maps. So yep, no more getting stuck in certain areas in the map if you die. You now respawn back at the last checkpoint you passed!

You'll get a little savegame message when you pass a checkpoint. Just a little notification string of text up at the upper left hand of your screen.

Enjoy!

Everybody? We switched back to pk3 formatting. It turns out that pk7 was probably a little too resource-intensive for folks with less than perfectly optimal machines.

Like the machine I use for testing it on for performance - a laptop with a 7th-gen processor and an older GeForce graphics card.

Pk7 was creating some serious lag issues on my laptop, presumably because it was having to stall to load resources from the tighter compression of pk7. It was so bad in some places, it was making the game almost unplayable. As soon as I got DarynS to switch back to pk3, however, everything started running a lot more smoothly again.

So yeah, pk3 it is from now on, I guess. We want to make a game that really shines on high-end machines, but we don't want to leave anyone out who might have older machines, either.

So yep, if you were experiencing these kinds of issues with the pk7 version of our latest upload, try downloading the pk3 version instead - which is now live, and in place of the previous, pk7 version.

Thanks, folks!
