So, tgz is a tar-gzipped file: En.wikipedia.org
On linux (in the quake dir):
tar -xzvf d2m1q1.tgz
On windows you might need a tool like WinRAR. The files still get extracted in the quake dir.
I feel bad that this took nearly 2 years for a reply. And it was just pure chance that I even saw your question...
