A few are a bit off but for the most part they are simple.

Characters need 3 things. Good hands, good feet, and a good face! The rest is cloth and musclework.

Anime does not count, but don't get me started on anime ffs...

If your going in to characters and possibly making them 3D from your drawings your gonna have to tackle rigging the character.

Im not artist, character modeler or im my opinion good at 3D in any way lol. If what your doing is a hobbie then stick to it but if your going pro with this rigging is a must so that the character can be animated. This information was given to a class in a university lectur by a highly recognised games developer (thats my back up lol).

Anyway I hope you found this information useful as it was only intended to help and not to offend, if you are going to advance with this i wish you the best of luck ^_^

I've already done both realistic and cartoony characters. Let me tell you that it is FAR easier to make a character in 3D then to draw one. Rigging is only difficult for some key locations, mainly the arms and upper torso, and the face (Especially for female characters and especially if your making the face animate-able). Since I am a modeler I won't be doing any hardcore animation, but I still have to learn it to a degree. Really it's just time consuming, and knowing weighs. For characters it's ALL musclework.

But who am I kidding I'm a prop modeler at heart :P

Well learn it to that degree that you deem acceptable and I am very sure everything will work out ;).

Like i said i am no Artist(or 3d modeller) i was just trying to pass on some useful/helpful information ^_^
