Lead developer on the "Killing Floor" mod, for Unreal tournament 2004.
Team Lead on "Depth" - UDK indie.
Ah, I see. Well something to think about! Even if Steam isn't an option, Patreon would definitely be a good plan. I heard about Blade of Agony from GGManLives Youtube.com
There are definitely a lot of other people out there who are digging what you've done!
Hey guys, this is an incredible game you've made. I'm really enjoying it!
I'd like to donate to the project but I FUCKING_HATE Paypal. Can you please give people who want to pay you another option? Like Patreon maybe?
Also, why not just release this work on Steam? People would shower you in dosh :)
That whale looks pretty ****** off!
Jaws Unleashed was definitely one of the inspirations for this ;)
*Looks down at the "I'm Jim ******* Sterling, Son" T-Shirt he's wearing*
Yeah... I uh.... Jim's alright I guess.
It matters because it proves that the developer is serious. While it's entirely possible to make a good game with a budget of zero dollars, and a bad game with a budget of ten million, the odds weigh heavily in favor of established teams or individuals with financial backing. Either they have had past successes, or people trust their concept enough to invest in it. Either way they're doing something right.
And yeah, $100 is pocket change for some kids these days.
I'll definitely be interested to see how this works out. $100 seems like too low of a barrier to entry, but the 30 day wait and the additional paperwork should help out.
Looks cool guys! Here's hoping it turns out more enjoyable than SOMA. I felt pretty let down by that one :/
Well that's interesting!
This probably isn't the right kind of place to talk about this stuff, but you can shoot me an email or facebook PM and I'd be glad to chat with you about it :)
Single Player sharkin' :)
More details to come soon!
Yeah that's fair, Rust actually has way more players than I realized. I played it once and that was enough for me :)
It's important to remember that all of those games you mentioned are also early access. I think there's some slightly different expectations for how EA games are developed. For example, people are probably more interested in new mechanics and gameplay refinements than cosmetic additions.
I recall when Killing Floor 2 tried to add cosmetics and loot drops during early access there was an uproar. If they had done the exact same thing 6 months after launching people would have probably been fine with it.
Nobody is going to be able to recreate the innovation of DayZ. Hell, even Dean Hall couldn't do it. It's an anomaly, and is probably more use as a cautionary tale than as an example of how developers can buck the trends in multiplayer gaming. That said, the survival genre hasn't matured enough yet to where these mechanics I've described have become mandatory. In fact, it has barely matured at all. The only true survival success story that springs to mind is Ark. As far as I'm aware, it is currently unchallenged in the genre, having eclipsed the player following DayZ had many times over.
Mirror puzzle....so hard :O
Damn, kinda wanted a copy of this.
I'm a subscriber, and I did all the requirements and still lost. Cool RNG, lol.
Ah well, might buy it at some point.
You put a baby in the oven. Nice.
That's cool! Yeah, i'm also using the Ocean Project as a base for my game's water solution. I know a gerstner wave when I see one ;)
I meant, are you using this :
Dude ! My HDTP character model work finally sees the light of a Steam release! After like ... 10 years! This is crazy ahaha
Ahhhhh I remember suggesting a subscription features YEARS ago. Chalk up another subscriber Scott!
The problem with this approach is that there's really no way to go after the devs who cut and run. Sure you can threaten 'lawsuits', but for anyone who has been involved in legal proceedings, you will know ... that's not ideal. The best you can hope for is that both parties lose a bunch of time and money and achieve very little. Design documents and feature lists are nice, but they don't amount to much when your game is not even playable.
hey guys, just wanted to let you know that we're running a beta event for everyone who has pre purchased the game starting tomorrow. More info over here Steamcommunity.com
hilarious video! Glad you enjoyed the game :)
I think every game goes through hell before it releases. We aren't any different in that respect.
Here is some (fairly) recent gameplay footage, so you can decide for yourself whether we made it - Youtube.com
I did some work on the UI, but other than that, no.
tell me about it!
Sharks are slaughtered for money, not out of fear. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that sharks are not the heartless sadistic killers we want them to be. They're animals, and yes, they're pretty beautiful and generally quite calm. Sadly, reality isn't very much fun, which is we create entertainment. Depth is entertainment. Am I helping you connect the dots at all here?
