Story (according to SAA and co.) goes something like this:
1. Crew went to battle expecting to face nothing bigger than 23 mm guns, so they were moving with deactivated Shtora-1 APS. Again.
2. Instead, top of the tank's turret was struck by ATGM. It destroyed the optics, set AA machine gun ablaze and stunned the crew in the turret.
3. So crew attempted to retreat when tank's side armor was struck by second ATGM. Driver was injured
4. Gunner and commander decided to bail out and ran away leaving injured driver behind. He was evacuated an hour later.
5. The fire was not extinguished and, eventually, it crawled into the tank and set it on fire, ultimately torching it to a crisp but without blowing it to smithereens. The shells detonated, but the turret didn't fly sky high.

Leaving MBTs burning from an external source will eventually overwhelm automated extinguishers. Case and point.

Apparently it wasn't the Syrians driving it. I believe it was the Fatemiyoun that crewed that T90. They are Afghans supported by Iran. Seems like they received a couple of T90s themselves since I've seen another one with the same flag in another video.

Well then I hope the Russians Learned their lesson in giving T-90s to those cowards.
What ****** me off is the T-90 carried them hard... the "mobility kill" was the driver being injured, it's quite likely the tank was still drivable.
And how about stop deactivating Shtora... it's there to save your bacon. Tiger forces swear by it, claiming it has decoyed sometimes multiple ATGM shots in one battle.
I've heard that Shtora can't be on if the hatches are open. And these guys seem to keep them open all the time. You can see that in the 1st video of a T90 getting hit by a TOW in the turret. Nothing happens to the tank but the gunner I believe had his hatch open, so he had a concussion and jumped out scared to death. It was also Fatemiyoun/Nujaba crew with the same flag on top.
The hatches may be open because they abandoned the tank. But who knows, it's possible they were driving around with them open.
Keeping the hatches open makes sense in the context it provides better all around visibility. And since the guys were only expecting light weapons and infantry so I guess the wanted to better spot targets.
With the exception of fire extinguisher (weren't they supposed to be automatic?) I will say this is a classic example of manure happening.
Extinguishers I do cover most of the internals, and maybe some of the external surfaces such as engine bay etc. but the issue was the RWS burning off and throwing 12.7mm into the internals, that takes a manual extinguisher.
I don't know how may times an internal extinguisher can fire either, my guess is that it ran out of Freon long before the RWS cooked off completely. I suppose it traveled through the electrics from there...
If I had to guess, the tank crew are used to driving the less protected T-55 to T-72 tanks with the hatch open to quickly escape the wreckage, as such they don't believe/trust the T-90 to survive hits and so keep it open.
Or for ventilation and (as you mentioned) visibility. Still, they are fully at fault.
Question, I understand that SHTORA does not stay on for all that long, does it automatically turn on once an ATGM launch is detected?
