That's how you see from the Abrams driver position.
This is the middle periscope ( which means his head is below the main hull and if someone shoots to the glass he's not going to be headshotted... ) out of the three and you can clearly see visibility isn't bad at all.
Of course the driver can't see behind the vehicle but commander and gunner have both periscopes and cameras to cover a 360° view around the vehicle.
You may also consider that driver usually is adviced by tank commander who can see the road and the possible threats much better than him because of his higher position.
