Report RSS Left 4 Dead SDK "this spring"

Custom maps will be discoverable from matchmaking; release to coincide with 'Survival Pack' DLC.

Posted by on

The first Left 4 Dead release for the Source SDK will allow the creation of custom Left 4 Dead campaigns that will be discoverable via L4D's matchmaking system. The SDK update is also due for release this spring, and is free of charge to all owners of L4D on the PC.

Read the full story. There is no mention of source code unfortunately, but then again this is only the "first" L4D release!

The 'Survival Pack' (which judging by Valve's wording could be an additional purchase even on PC will be free) will introduce two "complete campaigns for Versus", probably upgraded versions of Dead Air and Death Toll, and the titular new game mode, Survival.

Valve is an intelligent company. They will not charge for the update. Valve understands how PC gaming works is really what it comes down too. You could bypass paying for map packs so fast it's not even funny. It's absolutely absurd to think Valve would even do something like that. Shame on the poster.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but Valve isn't going to sign their own death warrant with the **** storm that will ensue,

Hmm if they try to charge for this update I will be VERY DISAPPOINTED in Valve. Don't get me wrong, I am happy about the SDK and all the free mods that will come from that.

Yep,improve the way we can expand your games and you're going to sell more games... it's pretty simply!

I think we should not worry about that, Valve was the first company that changed its bussines model and will keep that way for many years, that's for sure.

From the brief glance I have taken, am I correct in assuming the SDK will only allow for campaign creation? Why bother calling it an SDK then? Why not just call-it a campaign editor. Seriously.

Secondly, they say by spring? Don't they mean spring of '10? I'm pretty sure they will find reasons to push it farther back, because after all, a more complete product is better than one with a lot of "bugs".

Because its been called the SDK for
HL
OP4
BS
TFC
CS
DOD
HL:Source
HL2
HL2:DM
CSS
DODS
HL2:LC
HL2:EP1
TF2
Portal
HL2:EP2
Its what valve calls their editing suite. Also its not just a map editor, it upgrades all the editing tools valve provides to work with the slightly updated engine that L4D provides so it truly is an SDK.

DLC works with many companies, valve's smart enough to know people will pay for it happily and religiously. But spring's ~2 months away, could be sooner!

No sir you are wrong. Valve knows it's customers are smart enough NEVER to pay for DLC because most of the time its users make better DLC than valve itself. They aren't stupid so don't assume they are.

This is true.
TheHappyFriar, if you're "happy" to pay for DLCs then... You're MS's b*tch. Sorry. Wrong site to be happy on.

So if a person is buying a game that he likes, he is Microsoft's bitch for some reason?
And why can't we be happy on moddb?

No.
If a person buys a PATCH for the game, then - yes. He's pretty screwed.

hahah ya, Never underestimate the power of the people, user content available when valve software is purchased is both exceptional in quality and price (price being free). If they for whatever reason charge for the DLC I will disappointed and shocked. <3 Valve
