Signing up for the alpha is available for all on the game's site, so this giveaway is more than that, right?
This key gives you an access to the pre-Alpha tests of this game only, it doesn't guarantee access to the future Steam Early Access.
But pre-alpha access keys can be obtained from your website easily. Wasn't the point of the giveaway to win something that we couldn't get just be clicking on your site?

Unless i missed something this looks as if the devs are just taking advantage of Indiedb and Indiedb don't seem too bothered either.
Sure it is free to play, but this is not an opened test - to participate in it, you should fill in an application, and then wait until we see it, look through it and send or do not send you a key.
This is normal for MMO games to giveaway keys for their Alpha/Beta tests. You can see lots of similar giveaways on different sites.
