Description

You're alone at home, and you heard about this this called porn at school. From Seemingly Pointless, ‘You Must be 18 or Older to Enter’ recreates the feeling of being a prepubescent kid looking at porn for the first time. Through interactive fiction elements combined with ASCII styled art, ‘You Must be 18 or Older to Enter’ blurs several genres together to create an anxious experience. It is akin to horror yet the fear is of being caught by parentals and being embarrassed of looking at the human body. The ASCII art makes the images hard to read close up, making the player embody a child-like role. Audiences at farther distances will be able to see the pictures more clearly, casting them in the role of adults.

History

James Earl Cox III is making 100 games in 5 years. As his 76th game, ‘You Must be 18 or Older’ was originally prototyped as a Twine game. The idea was an attempt to create an alternative horror experience, one without monsters, death, or violence.

The early game hit off well with playtesters. Joe Cox and Julie Buchanan were brought on to help develop the game’s art and bring the soundscape to life. After a year of playtesting and iteration, the game was ported over to GameMaker Studio.

Inspired by innocent exciting experiences of youth, we wanted to make the player (sitting in front of their computer) feel like that kid; to make the player embody the character, anxious and uncomfortable. How looking at porn is a scary experience, you could be caught at any moment, yet how that thrill is what makes it worth it.
