You Are Empty takes place in 1955 in alternative Soviet Union, where Joseph Stalin still reigns. In an attempt to ensure the global victory of Communism, the government has constructed a massive psychic antenna to broadcast a reality-altering signal designed to transform the population of the Soviet Union into supermen. However, the experiment goes horribly wrong, and most of the population is either killed or transformed into homicidal mutants.

This is a tutorial, originally made by Cluster, for how to update this beloved game and play with HD textures. Later it was extended with ReShade (which adds more atmosphere into game) and updated files. This is a translated compact version of it (link to original tutorials and full information is down below), so all references in text goes to him.

- What's included:

- 4x upscaled textures (BSRGAN и RealESRGAN);
- Built-in ReShade with own preset;
- Unofficial patch 1.3;

- Installation:

  1. Download the build

- Launch and setup:

  1. Launch the game, setup, play

Shaders settings overlay - Home key;

- Recommendations:

  1. Launch time, because of textures, will increase a bit;
  2. ReShade turns off by pressing End button, you can turn it off completely by renaming opengl32.dll in the game folder;
  3. Don't forget to setup the brightness (gamma) for yourself with ingame menu (I tweaked it with consideration of the work of external ReShade-wrapper and configuration of my monitor);
  4. I highly recommend to turn on frame lmiter (I limited to 60 fps) in driver control pannel settings. Otherwise, there will be a problem with "dropping" image.
  5. If you want to play with weapon normal maps, you can find in C:\Users\*Name*\Documents\My Games\YaE\config_engine configuration file ds2engine.cfg, there change:
    use_shaders 1
    use_normalmaps 1
    In this case, the error will occur during loading, that can be skipped with Enter - the game will load.

Limitations:

  • graphical artifacts are possible with use_shaders 1 and use_normalmaps 1!
  • the last working with the game version of ReShade is 5.5.0!!! Do not update the ReShade, or else the game won't launch!

Interesting. I wonder if it's possible to use normalmaps for characters and enemies.

And environment textures too. The game uses static lighting, but maybe there's a way to bake lightmaps that include normalmap data like Painkiller: Recurring Evil developers did?

AI advancement is a curious topic too. Posters on the walls clearly look better with upscale. On the walls you can see that some details get sharper, others disappear, making the walls look cleaner. The barrel on third screenshot looks very unnaturally AI-generated.

The game can only use normal maps on certain objects: weapons, some doors. Doesn't work in the environment. All this is in test mode. The developers did not have time to introduce normal maps into their game, as well as dynamic lighting with HDR. It is possible to enable normal maps, but we will get a warning when the level is loaded. Otherwise, it's easier to transfer everything to another engine. P.S yesterday I redid the texture pack, I used other methods. We'll update screenshots soon for comparison.

Would it be possible to make HD textures for the English letters sometime in the future? I can sacrifice the goofy English dialogue for Russian but without the text, I'm lost :)

The *.DDS files from the archive must be moved to the folder (with replacement!):

\gameres\textures\textures\$dds\

I would like to say right away that the translation was made with the help of DeepL. There may be translation inaccuracies and problems related to the peculiarities of the Russian language! :)
