Without Light is a first-person adventure game which revolves around a blind boy that can envision sight through sound. Born blind, he has adapted the ability to figure out the shape and displacement of objects by making and listening to sounds. When it’s completely silent, the game will be pitch black. Any sound made in the game will produce visual ripples from and on the object that made the sound, temporarily making the object and a little of the environment around it “visible” for as long as the sound lasts. Certain objects have odors that are visualized as smoke, leading to the source of the smell. The player will use sounds and smell to navigate through the game. The game emphasizes the difficulty and inconvenience of living without the sense of sight. It also emphasizes the use of all the other senses to compensate for the lack. Thus, the game aims to demolish the barriers between those with sight and those without through a suspense-adventure game we call Without Light.

For this week’s update, what you are about to see is a sneak peek of how our echolocation system works in the game.

Echo—what?

Echolocation is the use of sound waves and echoes to determine the position and shape of objects that are in a certain space around a certain range.
Navigation in this game can be mainly done by echolocation.

Now that’s a challenge!
