White Day: A Labyrinth Named School (화이트데이: 학교라는 이름의 미궁) is a Korean survival horror game developed by Sonnori that tells the story of a young man's trip into school at the dead of night to deliver some candy to So-yeong, his crush, in preparation for the Eastern holiday of the same name (similar to Valentine's Day in Western countries).

As he sneaks in, he gets involved into a story that runs deeper than the school's innocent exterior. It doesn't take long for the place to go from moody and dark into a full-blown nightmare as parts of the school begin to grow dilapidated, ghosts begin to appear, and an insane janitor patrols the halls.

White Day is often regarded as a cult classic, prophetic of many of the horror game tropes we are familiar with today. It arguably pioneered the 'defenseless hero hiding in the dark' genre of horror a whole decade before Amnesia did, making the game way ahead of its time.

When it was released in 2001, White Day was hailed by many as the scariest game of all time. Even today, you'll hear fans say the same thing, due in part to its mastery of atmosphere, off-kilter presentation, subtle scares and erie old graphics, unmatched by other horror games today.

Due to piracy, White Day unfortunately sold very poorly. A year or two after it was released, Sonnori even removed the serial number requirement in an official update. A UK release of White Day was planned for 2004 by 4AM Entertainment, but the company shut down, so it never saw the light of day. As such, the game completely fell under the radar outside of Korea, with very little mention of its existence online.

The last copies of White Day were sold in 2004 with Sonnori’s 10th anniversary ‘Romance Package’ - a compilation of all their games up until that point. After that, the game quickly fell into the category of abandonware.

White Day finally surfaced in the English speaking world in 2013, albeit with a very poor translation, and a huge number of bugs. Over time the game was patched and retranslated by 'emuyia', formerly known as Unnamed, allowing many horror fans to experience this hidden gem for the first time.

Intro

Hey there! Welcome to this week's roundup of the YouTube, where we'll be summing up the last few vids that snuck in to the end of 2022! We won't be covering the MOTY/IOTY vids here but go ahead and check out the articles for Mod of the Year and Indie of the Year's results if you'd like to catch 'em!

We're also exploring ways to re-integrate IndieDB onto our YouTube channel, featuring more shorts and perhaps playthrough vids of some indie titles on the site! Stay tuned to see how that develops!

Monday Dec 19th - Playthrough - Penal-ized

Retro revival shooters have become quite common in recent years, but one of the rarer products of this trend is new games on classic engines. Ion Fury is built upon a modified Build Engine - the same one which once powered Duke Nukem and beyond - and features its own modding support, leading to such scenarios as Penal-lized and keeping the field of retro level design alive and well in 2022.

Friday Dec 23rd - Playthrough - Half-Life: Trials

Half-Life's pseudoscientific theming is an aspect that defines one of the main differences between it and its successor; making even the craziest of proposals for a story expansion plausible in-universe. Half-Life: Trials isn't quite pushing the boundaries of belief, but as a sentient-ish military android designed to replace human combatants, it's premise is simple, effective, and full of potential for explosive fun.

Monday Dec 26th - Playthrough - Portal: ISOLOPHOBIA

Isolophobia is an open-world Portal map inspired by the "liminal space" trend. One of the things that makes Portal so memorable is its atmosphere and presentation - a lonely, dry experience that borders on horror at times. Many of us wished we could simply explore Aperture at our leisure, and if that's you, then this mod's tailor-made to channel that atmosphere and give you the freedom to peruse.

Friday Dec 30th - Playthrough -White Day Repackaged

Some mods are bombastic total conversions that are akin to games; others are revisions of our favourites with more features to dig into. There's a quieter genre of mods, though, that White Day Repackaged belongs to - dutiful patches of older titles to make them work on modern hardware. These unsung heroes deserve the spotlight too - so sit back and check out this community-revised cult classic.

I know your comment is very old but in case anyone else needs this information as well, try playing at a 4:3 aspect ratio. You can do this by selecting a resolution in the settings of the launcher which is 4:3.
