This field report showcases the process the Springfield M1861 has gone through in production.

Hello and welcome to our fourth field report!

You may have noticed that we haven't posted anything in a while, and some of you may even have wondered if the project has died. But I'm pleased to say that the team have just taken a small holiday and are now back in action! The first model I made for War of Rights was the Springfield M1861. Many of our models has gone through a couple of iterations. But this rifle however is the one that has gone through the most. Or well, in fact thats's a lie. The first model I made for the game was the Henry rifle which was a disaster.. Considering that it was for a game.
Now that's over, let's look at the real deal. The M1861.
I've highlighted some of the errors and as you can see it is nowhere near perfect. But at the time I was quite proud of it.One of the first things I decided to change was the wood around the metal plate that the hammer is attached to. This wood was actually non existant on the first version. I also want you to notice the metal plate on the wood and the hammer.
This is the model that is showcased as one of our first pictures. I was extremely pleased with this model for quite a while. But the model still received a few improvements now and then. But all that changed today as I'm happy to announce the hopefully final version of the Springfield M1861 rifle.

I hope you enjoyed reading about the growth of our Springfield M1861. I for one cant wait to hold it in my virtuel hands ;)

What is your tri-count on that? It looks pretty good, but it also looks very highpoly. Will you be baking normals for use on a lowpoly model? Or have you already done that?

Could we see a wireframe?

I also get the feeling his texture sizes are huge too.

You'd only want something like this model strictly if you were able to use a lod system to scale it back when its not in range. You wouldn't rely on this as the basis for all your game assets, rather you'd have this only if the model were directly in front of you. One would hope that the dev retops this model and bakes to a much more optimized geo for the sake of LOD.

One does not simply dev for Cryengine without Lods lol.

Who said we didn't use lod's?

And as I've previously said. This isn't the 3rd person model that will be lying somewhere in the world. But this version of the rifle is only the one the player will be carrying in the 1st person view.

A normalmap has been baked for the small dots on top of the hammer. The model you see there is intended for use in the first person view. And sure. Will upload it in a few minutes.

That seems excessive for a weapon model, looking at the henry rifle it seems like you have an absolute ton of unnecessary edge loops.

But don't mind me, I'm just a 3d modeler for quake 3 based games :)

(But, I would like to point out if you want to have massive battles you're going to want to create a lower detail version of this model for third person and/or make Level of Detail models... I'm not sure how CE3 handles this. You're also going to miss a lot of detail in first person i.e. you probably won't see the stock much... I was going to say the barrel but the gun loads from the front :P )

The Henry Rifle. At least that model has been thrown into the garbage can. It was only to show the evolution of the Springfield from nothing to now. And as I previously said. This model isn't the 3rd person version :p. Of course we´re going to trim it down quite a bit for that :).

But yeah some details can probably be removed at places the player wont see. But we are planning to have some quite realistic reloading animations and since this is a front loader, the player will most likely get to see more of the gun than in the usual "modern warfare" games". So we'll trim it when we start working on the animations :).
