Today is November 11th - Remembrance Day. Also known as Poppy Day, this memorial day is observed by Commonwealth members since the end of World War One. A day dedicated to remember those who gave their life during WW1. Other non-Commonwealth countries started to follow this tradition and have their Remembrance Day on November 11th.
As more countries follow this tradition of remembering those who’ve fallen in their line of duty, November 11th is known under many names, but all with the same idea in mind. This tradition grew out of Armistice Day, which marks the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany. In the USA, it is also known as Veterans Day.

Lest We Forget
Not only by Commonwealth members, but by France too. This particular day is known as "anniversary of the Armistice of 1918". This is the annual commemoration of victory and peace or "Feast of November 11".
If the red poppy is the symbolic flower worn on this date in Commonwealth, in France it's the blue cornflower.
A little reminder: it's in this country that the vast majority of the battles took place during WWI.
A heavy toll for it : 1.7 million dead, 4.3 million wounded soldiers. At the end of 1918, there are 4,000 municipalities (out of the 36,000 existing in France) destroyed, devastated or degraded over 3,337,000 ha of agricultural land in ten departments.
Material destruction is significant and severely affects too homes, factories, farms and other communication infrastructure such as bridges, roads or railways, without counting the major part of the coal mines of the North of France, drowned by the Germans.
But the balance sheet isn't stopped at the end of the war : a century after the outbreak of the First World War, around 100 deminers are still employed full-time securing unexploded shells in the northeast quarter of France. It still happens that some of these shells explode when they are discovered. Accidents also occur because of submerged ammunition containing poison gases. The presence of these shells in the environment also generates soil pollution.
For these various reasons, France is maybe even a little more concerned with WWI and all its consequences.
