The Cromwell tank began its development as a new Cruiser tank to replace the ageing Crusader series. It was originally to be fitted with the 6-pounder; a good, high velocity anti-tank gun. This was soon overruled and it was fitted with a 75mm cannon like that of the Sherman, to ease ammunition needs and to provide better HE support for the infantry. This had the effect of greatly reducing the tank's anti-armour capability.
