We fixed the crashes associated with the first release, and updated some game features based on feedback. Here's the newest build of the Vagante Public Alpha.

well this was not what i was expecting. but still, after learning the control setup a little better i found it quite enjoyable. i hadn't run into any bugs... but i did wish i was able to jump with the spacebar instead. either way this was one of the better indies i downloaded tonight. i feel i can't expect people to play my game if i am too busy to play other peoples games. its like 4 in the morning haha. anyway... im sorry i couldn't give you any constructive criticism mostly because the game has its core intact and is very playable. good job overall. my company couchfort gamez is working on a 2.5D action platform game called AntiHero. if you could give us any critical feedback it would be much appreciated. thanks for your time and when you get the chance check our two person indie team out at www.couchfortgamez.com or search indiedb. we have mac and pc versions...and we have ps4, ps3, and xbox 360 controller support. thanks again! -matt @CouchFortGamez

You can re-bind your keys in the menu. Press "Esc" and go into "Controls". It's fairly intuitive at that point. Thanks for playing!

UNless there's a way to wall jump or double jump I can't figure out, I'm stuck. I have attached a link to imgur, you cannot jump high enough to get back up and this is the only ledge or object. I was doing really well besides low hp.

Killed the dragon and have a ton of gear in my backpack.

AHA! Had a teleport scroll THANKFULLY. Is this something I should start to look out for? I mean, if it's intentional cool because I'll just be more careful. And stuck again.
FYI, take gear off so you can jump higher.

DAMN! Thought I could get a boss to get attack the merchant and kill each other. But if he takes damage he ALWAYS attacks you.

Not sure if this is intentional, but lasers from the sword swing (Holy Lv. 2) will jump up one level and keep going if you swing sword into wall that is one block high.

I'm experiencing heavy flickering in the interface to the point where it's unplayable. I'm running Windows 7 on a really old laptop using onboard intel HD graphics. Is there a possible fix for this?

Could you possibly provide a screenshot via imgur or some other such service? We've been able to test on some lower-end machines and can only see minor texture bleeding, which will eventually be fixed.

Apparently if you get one of those accesories that lets you phase through walls, if you phase to the outside of the map, you die.

Hello, just wanted to let you know that I am totally digging this game. The art / genre / gameplay mechanics are all points I'm absolutely loving and agree with. Played the game, here's a few points I've noticed (I'll try to keep it short, apologies if I sound demanding):

Smoking Gloves
Found this item with -5% Decreased Attack Speed (double negative). Change to -5% Attack Speed.

Using a 360 controller, in inventory menu B shouldn't be mapped to drop item, instead use Y.

People are used to B being back or exit menu.(best of all would be to keep A for confirm and B for cancel as in all other games).

Teleport skill, should it be able to teleport you inside a wall? The first time I used it I died horribly, instantly.

Down + Attack with sword has a very short bounce to it which makes the window to repeat this attack -very- short. Add monster movement with it and it becomes incredibly hard. Can we change this so that if we hold it, it keeps doing the downward attack? Would require some playtesting ofcourse.

Todo: add a way to see what each stat icon does(or means) in inventory screen.

Then there's some level design issues that happen with certain areas and mobs or bosses combined.

I've had a couple of time where I would be unable to progress. (A slime had pushed a rock against a wall that I needed to push into the other direction to avoid spikes. I couldn't and that was the only way to progress through the level).

Add a way to simply drop the girl instead of throwing her.

Please change the way the door works. 9/10 times I accidentally move through it. I've had it being placed underwater (swimming up and I went through it) and I've had a eating plant + chest placed in front of it, which messed me up and I went through it without the girl.

That's it for now. I'm looking forward to seeing more. Can't wait for the final release of the game. If there's anything else you need tested or future builds, I'll be glad to help out!

Thanks for the detailed comments, we do appreciate it and it doesn't come off as demanding at all. I liked your points about default controller layout and menu controls. I have to agree with most of that, but I suppose the reason why we haven't ironed this out is because we've been mostly testing with keyboard controls hahahah.

Your story about your usage of teleportation killing you instantly is interesting in that it is actually a desired mechanic. Was it unfair the first time it happened to you? Sure, it probably felt that way, but what did you learn from the experience?

Here's a tip for your down-stab issue: if you hold jump as you down-stab an enemy, you'll actually bounce higher!

You also pointed out some other issues we need to work out, and don't worry - these problems are being addressed. Great job on completing the alpha!

Never going to even bother to equip that skill, as its distance is difficult to gauge and a slight mis press of a button means instant death no matter how geared your character is. I don't believe it was unfair. I'm a huge fan of the Souls series :).

Great to hear you guys are on things. I'll try the stab thing out.

Completed the alpha a bunch of times now, can't wait for a real challenge ;).

Things I liked:
Lots of items. Lots of good choices that gave you very different results while playing the game.

Easy / Hard enemies. Surprisingly a challenge but mainly just due to the lack of response with the character. Still entertaining to master.

Good graphics. Sometimes got lost in them, I think its mainly just color balance but overall good.

Being able to attack the shop keeper was awesome. Just don't like it when I accidentally do it. (crashed the game when I started destroying the sign and the door)

Enjoyed the difficulty and size of the maps increasing per level.

The physics etc were pretty great. Never felt too off. Some solid programming, definitely.

Things I didn't like:

Enemies can attack you while you're still zoning into an area. IE walking through a door.

Teleport can send you anywhere, including into a wall which instantly kills you. Not much gameplay presence there.

Spikes and falling blocks instantly killing you is a big turn off. Doesn't feel rewarding, especially if you don't see them. (often times due to the blood on the ground etc)

Sometimes you will get lost in combat just trying to kill one enemy and by the end of it they will have taken a crap ton of life away from you. This is mostly due to not being able to change directions as you attack. They will continue to jump on you etc while you're trying to get to the sides of them. Overall very annoying when it happens.

Too many negative items. For a game that is dependent on getting good items to continue through, those times where you get nothing but items that take away things from you really hurt.Its more or less saying "time to restart", because you will die anyways. I would suggest a slider in the options to limit that.

Creatures still attack you while talking to the shop keeper. Feel like they should more or less pause.

Character icon at the bottom of the screen shows him wearing green. His sprite wears red.

Didn't understand phasing through walls or floors. Never seemed to work.

I'm sorry that you don't like the insta-death feel to the game, unfortunately it's there to stay. Real rogue-likes are not very forgiving, but that adds some spice to the flavor in its own way!

For phasing through walls, did you ever try literally walking through a wall? For phasing through floors, try "dropping off a platform" on solid floor tiles.

Its more of the frustration that I feel when its undeserved. If its my fault, its my fault. But when you take your time, dodge each attack, run backwards to make sure you're level with enemies to attack them right, collect all the items per level and then you use teleport and it blasts you into a wall, or you step onto a trap because you didn't see it because there was a corpse on it, or you move a block onto the switch and you try to jump over the block and the switch still triggers. Just stuff like that. My entire point was just make it feel like you deserved to die if it happens. No cheap deaths.

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but the dl is not working on my windows 8 pc.

I download it, extract it, and launch the "vagante" application, then receive this error:
"Runtime Error!... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I'd love a little help because this game looks outrageously fun.

We've seen a bunch of other people having similar issues with the deployment. Unfortunately this kind of thing is somewhat difficult to debug since our machines can't reproduce it, but we're investigating.

Hey! Thanks for sharing this awesome alpha! I can play this for hours. and I have been. finally beat the three bosses and then beat all three again in the same one and then I got an error. wish it had a save feature.

Completely wonderful game. Since I heard about it early last week, I've been playing it for at least two-ish hours each day. Few other games have grabbed my attention this closely. The day that you let me throw cash at a pre-order for this, know that I'll be there.

Buuuut I -have- run into a few crashes here and there. The most recent resulted in the end of my 6, almost 7(?) floor run. It seemed to happen the instant my blade cleaved a goblin in twain, and my beam of light, missing the foe, hit an approaching slime.

I would have included an actual log, but for whatever reason, my game did no generate a crash log. That may be a bug in of itself, but I cannot give much of a reason why it happened.

Excellent little Indie game here! Finally just beat the 3 bosses, didn't run into any bugs in any of my attempts on my Win764 machine. Didn't even have any crashing running it through Wine under Linux on my crappy little laptop!

A note to others, I found it to be a far more enjoyable experience with a gamepad. I played with a PS3 controller and it was very painless compared to the keyboard.

Can't wait to see where this goes in the future! There's an excellent framework in place for a highly successful Roguelike once the existing formula is expanded upon.

Am i the only one who has trouble fighting the a flying boss without a bow? I've played this game for a little while and encountered this flying boss 4 times now, i can't seem to be able to attack in mid-air and the is no real aiming up with the bow so i'm stuck if i get that boss. Help please?

You should invest into Archery affinity points in the Rogue class.

Hey, awesome game. Commenting just to post about dodge rolling as the archer, I think if you're walking toward left or right when you press down the character should roll as is you have to completely halt movement, press down then select a direction, kind of break the flow of combat. Just a minor thing.
Keep up the awesome work.

We originally had it so you could simply press down to roll even when moving, however this led to a lot of accidental rolls which seemed far worse than halting movement first.

Is this a bug or a feature? With the "Cumulus Baselard" equipped I cant downward attacks or slide while attacking.

A Baselard is a type of dagger. That affinity skill set only works on swords!

Wasn't sure whether this was the right place to post or not. I'm currently playing Alpha 14b I believe.

I really like Vagante, it is a great game. I'm glad I am supporting its development by buying it for myself and a copy as a prize give away.

I would like to be able to name my characters. Also some kind of viewable leaderboard so you can see your best progresses etc. I would also like to see the Tutorial area fleshed out a little bit. I managed to blow up the fish in the Tutorial and got trapped in the area below and came across a sign which said "Tori". Couldn't figure a way out other than drowning my character to re-appear on a ledge above (as you can die in the Tutorial which is good).

The video where I got trapped is on my channel but it might have been me being stupid...

Otherwise keep up the great work! Cant wait to see how the final release shapes up.

Also I think this title would do really well on the Wii U because of the gamepad (imagine using that to manage your inventory etc). Although I'm not sure about target audience wise if you know what I mean.

I know some developers are on the fence when it comes to online co-op but I think it is 100% a must. Just as it adds variety, randomness & competition etc etc etc. Although I've no idea how difficult this would be or what your financial restraints are. Even having the 'option' of a companion AI which obviously you don't need to have (for people who want a companion but may not have friends if there is no online play etc). Then there would be a trade off of "Should I save the AI? Or use them as a minor distraction?" and so on. It would be cool to choose what character the companion is etc.

Anyways. Hope anything I've said helps a little. Love the game!
