So what is threshold? Threshold is a survival building RPG

in a vast world just waiting to be explored and conquered. Players will be able

to deform terrain, build structures, fly airships, fight pirates and monsters,

and much more.

The game will use voxel blocks for the terrain to create unique worlds

that allows players to mine resources and dig predictably without resorting to flat cubes.

Threshold also employs a separate block building system that allows

players to construct almost anything they can imagine. Not every block has to

be a cube either. Threshold primarily uses bricks to create structurally sound

buildings. Blocks cannot float in the air, and will be rated on how much load they can

take before breaking.

Crafting will allow players to construct the tools weapons

and building materials that they will need to survive and thrive in Threshold. Crafting tables give players a larger grid to work with for more complicated patterns. However, not all recipes can be created with your bare hands alone. Each crafting table will also have three tool slots. Certain

tools will be required to build higher level items. A bore for example might be

used to make barrels for rifles or handguns. A chisel would be required to cut

raw stone into stone bricks. Placing a second crafting table next to the first creates an

extended crafting table. This creates a larger grid with more tool slots to

allow for the most advanced technologies and powerful weapons.

What Now

News

Well, we didn’t get funded. We are deeply grateful to those who backed us and we hope you will stick around to see what we try next.

So what are we going to do now? BACKUP PLAN! Threshold was a long shot. We knew we were asking for a whole lot of money for a startup company with no track record. We did this because we honestly believed that was the amount we needed to really get Threshold off the ground, and we still believe that. Any less and we would have simply run out of funds early and ended up with half finished mess. For example if we tried to make a full 3D sandbox game with $450. However, both Nathan and I have much MUCH smaller backup projects which we are beginning to prototype now. We hope to get these projects onto Steam early access to begin building some funds as well as some good reputation.

If you have checked out the Stellar Knights Indie DB page you may have already guessed what I will be working on. Suffice to say Threshold will have to be put on hold for a little while. Fear not, we still love the idea and once we have built up our reputation a bit you can be sure we will try again. Look out for news about our projects here on Indie DB: Indiedb.com

Hope to see you all again soon,
Steven M. Palermo

I absolutely love this game, I've been playing the demo for a good couple of hours now and it is great. Always wanted this from a game, I really hope it does well in the future. :)

The idea is good. All entries in this genre is a good thing. Under the condition they are made well. Unity is good choice if you know what you are doing. Most importantly it offers very good platform portability, which if popular is a really nice things to have. Most other things can be solved.
But this game is very, VERY early yet. So there is not much to say than good luck. Try to keep a very open channel to the outside. Communicate alot and often. Talk to wouldbe donors. Show how, when, what and all that stuff and you might actually bring this about. But many have tried and failed.
So good luck! I'll keep an eye out for this project (at 75+ donations since 2011 and still going strong :D )

This looks amazing. Glad to see that this isn't just minecraft, and I hope this game goes well.

Seems like a knock off of minecraft.

Not exactly. I won’t deny a lot of similarities with Minecraft. It is a wonderfully inspirational game, and now I want to improve upon the genre it created. The structural integrity features will make building require a little more skill, and hopefully thus be that much more rewarding. Threshold also has a stronger focus on combat with more unique types of enemies. Also threshold has airships.

100k is a lot to ask, Do you guys even have any work done on it yet?

100k is a lot, but it has to support us completely for at lest a year and also buy us some professional art.

So far as what we have done, you saw the block building and ground checks working if you watched the Kickstarter video. They still have some bugs to work out but they are fully functional at this point, we just don't have a lot of blocks yet.

The Voxeland system that allows players to dig is also working, it just hasn't been tied into the players tools yet.We will be working on that this coming week actually.

Not shown in the video, we also have thrown weapons, and a tool for breaking blocks working.

There will be an update on Sunday explaining whats been going on in detail.

Using unity to make a game isn't the best of decisions. Especially considering that you are using plugins instead of actually coding the majority of the program yourself.

Actually, Unity is an excellent engine to go with. Hit titles like Kerbal Space Program and Wasteland 2 have been made in Unity with great results. I have actually come to find it far easier to work with than Unreal Engine 3 which I used extensively while I was at Full Sail University.

Voxeland is also our only plugin. Everything else has been coded internally.

Kerbal uses many more resources than necessary, and isn't very detailed. I don't think a game that would require more than double that minecraft does can use unity and run on most systems that people own. I wish you the best of luck, but try to rethink some things.
