The Beacon: Chapter 1 is a single player psychological horror game designed in the Unreal Engine 4 and is heavily story oriented. With story in mind, The Beacon focuses on atmosphere and symbolism rather than jump scares. The intention is for the player to become fully immersed, with or without using Virtual Reality. This helps towards the goal of giving the player a real sense of paranoia that forces them to question their safety in real life.
The experience is crafted such that it immerses the player into the life of the character they are playing as. This is where a horrific atmosphere versus traditional jump scares plays a big role. The goal is to change the direction of the popular indie horror movement to a path of more realistic environments, that makes the player feel uneasy and unsafe. This is done by using nightmarish yet plausible scenarios in such a way that it plays upon player's primal fears.
We aim for the game to have an extreme play-ability factor. One can play through just for the horror aspects and get through it quickly, or can take their time trying to put together the story that directly leads into the next chapter. In addition to the Oculus Rift helping with immersion into the game play, it also results in the player wanting to become more involved with the lore.
