SteamGears

Platforms: PC, Linux, Mac

Style: Massively Multiplayer
Theme: Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Realism.

The Gameplay
:
• Using an Isometric (2.5 Dimensions) view, this is a sandbox/building game where you scavenge for resources and try to protect yourself from the dangers of the wastelands. You can build your own house, steambike, even create your own village! As you act in the game, you master more and more skills, enabling you do do even more things. To add some spice to the experience, you also have to be very careful, because in this game, death is permanent.

How it works: The game client is built atop a customized Slick2D Engine using openGL and communicates with a RedDward Server.

Some rough ideas that defines this game are:
Energy Generation:
• Water Wheels, Human-Powered Animal Wheel
• Steam Powered from burning wood (Instead of Coal.)
• Wind Energy
• Burning of oil, creating heat

Wild Life
• Wild Dogs, Wild Cats, Skunks, Badgers, rats, etc.
• Mutated Dogs, Cats, Rats, etc.
• Maverick Robots: Policebots, Cleaning bots and others.

Combat
• Necessary for conflict resolution and the permanent death concept, combat has to pose a moticum of danger to everyone involved.

Combat has to be finely balanced as to stay clear of both veterans fighting without risks and new characters being able to win against well equipped veterans. True to the SteamPunk style, you can expect SteamMuskets, explosives and all sort of crazy weapons and armors.

Underground Architecture and Mining
• Caves and mines will be valuable with their rich rare resources but also much more dangerous than the average hard-life on normal land. Random gas pockets, caves collapses and other dangers make this kind of areas risky even for well developped characters.-

Survival
• You will have to scavenge the world to find materials to construct your own fort or settlement and be able to defend it. Will you trade with your neighbors? Or will you kill them and steal their valuables and enjoy the life as a thief – this might not go unpunished so be careful!-

Team up
• We will allow you to team up with your friends to progress faster, more securely too and be less lonely. Creating a fort that can’t possibly ever be taken over (or can it?) or build a town and start openly recruiting for new folks and meet new people.
The game was inspired from inspired by: Dwarf Fortress, H&H, RuneScape, WurmOnline and Ultima Online. Many ideas from the community at our forums (http://steamgears.freeforums.org/index.php) gets read and put into the game.

This seems like a really interesting idea. Cross between H&H and fallout.

Alot of stuff is new, but none of it is actually interesting for the crowd so I added an image showing a Radioshack, some odd grass tile and some (heavy work in progress) metal fence.
