The difficulty of researching depends on the improvements in your spaceship. If it is too weak, it will be difficult for you to conduct researching over long distances.

At any time during the space race, you can use batteries that replenish the supply of the shield, you can have them in unlimited quantities, you can replenish the supply of batteries by picking them up in space or by purchasing them in the store.
