Silent Station: Screaming in a Vacuum is a 2D side-scrolling roguelike survival horror game.

In Silent Station, players take on the role of Human Resources Specialist 11-F. As an HR person, it is your job to occasionally let go of a few undesirable employees. Only these employees are on a space station, and this time they aren't being fired because they are stealing the stationary as much as they are being fired fired because they have become crazed murderers.

Walk through the dark halls of an abandoned and randomly generated space hulk, going room by room while collecting data and clues as to what exactly happened on board the space station Freedonia. Your ultimate goal is to overload the engine cores on each deck and scuttle the station, but be careful: Ammo is scarce, and the current inhabitants of the station won't take kindly to your presence. Watch your back, get in, then get out.

  • Explore a randomly generated space station. Every play-through is different.
  • Fight or flight! Ammo is scarce, and discretion can be the better part of valor.
  • You are never safe. Crazed scientists as well as otherworldly beings will stalk you through the station, room by room.
  • Set the core to overload on each deck to progress, but you better get back to the airlock before the deck blows.
  • Unravel the mystery of what caused the space station to go dark in the first place.

Silent Station is Released

News

After some months of struggle (not to mention producing and releasing a completely separate game in the meantime), Silent Station: Screaming in a Vacuum has finally been released to multiple platforms. From conception to delivery, Silent Station has evolved from being a simplistic horror toy to a richly featured survival horror roguelike. I'm very proud about the end result of this long development journey.

Naturally, with ongoing development wrapped up, that can only mean that the promotional phase of the project is in full swing. That in turn means cool new media, like this hot new release trailer:

Two fantastic artists were commissioned for character design work during the production of Silent Station, which greatly helped to bring the overall artistic quality of the game a long way from the placeholder programmer art of the early alpha builds. As you can see, the completed revision of the player character's design looks very sleek, bright, and futuristic:

By contrast, the designs of the deranged space station enemies are much more frenetic, dark, and rustic looking:

All of this artwork comes together to provide the moody, intense atmosphere of the game that will hopefully keep players feeling hunted and unsafe.

The development of Silent Station, being only my second full game, has been a great learning experience for me. Stay tuned for a detailed postmortem analysis which will include all the little lessons I learned throughout this development effort.

Silent Station is available now on all Android devices, Windows phones and tablets, and Windows 8 desktops.
